European Poker Tour Copenhagen -- Day 2Leaders Topple After Stepping into Day 2 Battlezone in Copenhagen |
|
Day 2 of the PokerStars European Poker Tour went from one extreme to another with big names steaming through the field and zooming up the ranks, and other well-respected names hitting the rail with nothing.
The top three players who went into day 2 were all knocked out as the day progressed. Andrew Pantling, Ilkka Koskinen, and Sebastian Ruthenberg [pictured right] were replaced by Csaba Toth, Fabian Gentile, and Stig Rossen. Pantling’s run largely met its end when the Canadian was moved to Kristoffer Thorsson’s table. Thorsson was the first player to reach 300,000 in chips. Ruthenberg left at the hands of fellow Team PokerStars Pro player Peter Eastgate, who ruled his table throughout the day.
Toth, the chip leader going into day 3, was the only player to get over the half a million chip barrier, but he will face tough competition in the form of Gentile (who made an impressive move against Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier. Details of the hand are written below), Stig Rossen (a famous singer in Denmark but just as capable at the felt), plus various threatening poker faces including ElkY, Annette Obrestad, Jens Kyllonen, and Roberto Romanello.
The field was trimmed to 76 before the end of play and some of the unfortunates no longer in the running for the DKK 3,675,000 (€493,700) top prize are Jan Skampa, Soren Jensen, Martin Wendt, Dario Minieri, Rasmus Nielsen, Arnaud Mattern, Tony Cascarino, Ruben Visser, and Michael Greco. Team PokerStars Pro player Johnny Lodden was knocked out with pocket sevens versus the pocket nines of teammate, ElkY. He can’t be too devastated however as just after day 1A finished he played online in the PokerStars $1,000 Super Tuesday and finished in third for the best part of $50,000. Another PokerStars Pro player to make his exit was Luca Pagano. The Italian struck out during the very last level of the night.
The top 10 in chips going into day 3 are:
Csaba Toth (Hungary) PokerStars qualifier 561,900
Fabian Gentile (Belgium) 413,300
Stig Rossen (Denmark) 411,200
Kristoffer Thorsson (Sweden) 380,400
Roberto Romanello (UK) 349,200
Ricky Fohrenbach (USA) PokerStars qualifier 337,600
Henrik Junker (Denmark) 307,200
Thomas Froslev (Denmark) 306,400
Peter Eastgate (Denmark) Team PokerStars Pro 302,000
Berjar Rustom (Denmark) 290,700
Now for that hand between ElkY and Fabian Gentile:
Not long after ElkY [pictured left] busted Johnny Lodden, he wanted in on the action again. He bet 6,700 from mid-position and got one caller – the Belgian in the big blind, Fabian Gentile.
Both players checked the Q 6 3 board and the turn was the J. Gentile bet 6,600 and ElkY made the call. The river was dealt the 7 and Gentile bet a small but ominous 3,000. ElkY quickly raised it to 18,800, and Gentile reraised it to 59,300. ElkY smiled and folded K K face-up, while Gentile happily raked in the chips. He had A 6 for bottom pair all along.
