Padraig Parkinson, ambassador for Poker for the HomelessThe PaddyPowerPoker.com Poker for the Homeless March Madness II weekend held at Dublin’s Jackpot Club has proved a roaring success raising close to €15,000 for charity across the two days play.

Numbers for the Friday night €100 freezeout were up from 93 to 97 (€1,940 raised for charity) with a further €1,430 raised by Phil Baker and his horse auction at the Cheltenham Festival preview – Eddie Walsh from The Loft poker club in Naas donated his winnings from the auction.

Sunday saw a strong turnout of 104 players (26 teams) for the team event which raised €1,040 while individual and corporate donations exceeding €7,000 over the weekend.

Ambassador for the fundraising festival, Padraig Parkinson, said, “To beat last year’s total of €10,000 in the current economic climate shows that Irish poker players have real heart. Thanks to everyone who played, worked at, supported, and donated to the fundraising effort. With some donations still to come in we’re confident we’ll surpass €15,000 for the weekend and will publish the accounts online just after the Irish Open.”

Brother Kevin Crowley, whose Capuchin Day Centre which feeds Dublin’s homeless population, attended the event on Friday night and thanked everyone for supporting the festival, saying, “We have a certain amount of people who come through here [Capuchin Day Centre] who are on the down through gambling, drink, and drugs. I don’t for a moment condone gambling but this comes from the heart.

Celebrities who attended the event included former snooker world champion Ken Doherty, Lenister rugby coach Reggie Corrigan and boxers Jim Rock and Michael Carruth. The event was filmed for future TV broadcast by Winmedia Ireland.
