PokerStars launches 2010 Americas Cup of Poker todayPlay poker, represent your country, and win cash — what’s not to like, right?

Monday marks the kickoff of the 2010 PokerStars Americas Cup of Poker. In Americas Cup, online poker players from across the Western hemisphere will vie to qualify to represent their respective countries in a live event alongside representatives from Team PokerStars Pro. Those playing in the live event are gunning for a piece of a $150,000 prize pool.

Nine specific countries are to be represented: USA, Mexico, Canada, Colombia, Chile, Venezuela, Peru, Brazil and Argentina. Along with those countries, a 10th group called “Rest of LATAM” (the rest of Latin America) will get a spot to represent.

Here’s how it works, in steps:

  1. Play in freerolls, $0.11, or $1.10 buy-in tournaments on PokerStars to earn points for your country. Points are awarded to the top 100 players in each tournament.
  2. The country whose players earned the most points in that match wins that match.
  3. The six countries that won the most matches automatically qualify to be represented in the final.
  4. Players from the remaining four countries then compete in a playoff for the two remaining spots.
  5. Once the eight countries are set, the four players from each country who scored the most points for their countries throughout the promotion earn seats representing their countries in the live event.
  6. The Team Captain position for each represented country will be filled by a member of Team PokerStars Pro who hails from that country.
