Lithuania Declares Poker to be a SportDistinction Will Allow Non-Commercial Tournaments in the Country |

Oftentimes it is the subject of a mindless debate — should poker be considered a sport?
Well, that debate is unlikely to end now, but one country has decided that for its purposes, poker indeed does qualify as a sport.
On March 20, the department of physical education and sports of Lithuania issued a decree that recognized and established the Lithuanian Sports Poker Federation as an official sports federation in the country.
What that means is that the Lithuanian Sports Poker Federation can now organize non-commercial poker tournaments outside of casinos in the country.
“This is extremely important step in our work,” said Andrius Tapinas, the president of the Poker Federation. “We are receiving congratulations from many of our colleagues abroad, and I know that we are breaking thick ice with our progress for similar international initiatives.”
The federation has scheduled a poker tournament in Vilnius for April 24-26.
Russia, Lithuania’s neighbor, had also briefly classified poker as a sport before removing that distinction last year.
