World Poker Tour Championship: Faraz Jaka Leads Final 18 Players

All Remaining Players Are Now In The Money

Faraz JakaIt was payday down at the 2010 World Poker Tour Championship. A total of 35 players entered the day with hopes getting through the money bubble unscathed, but only 18 of them would achieve that goal.

The players were still deep stacked relative to the blinds and antes, but it didn’t take long before the field began to shrink. It wasn’t long before we lost David “Devilfish” Ulliott and he was quickly followed by former champions Carlos Mortensen and Yevgeniy Timoshenko.

As the tournament approached the money bubble play began to tighten, but not for WPT Player of the Year candidate Faraz Jaka as evidence by his elimination of Heather Sue Mercer.

Heather Sue Mercer raised to 40,000 from under the gun and Faraz Jaka reraised to 110,000. Mercer then reraised to 300,000 and Jaka moved all in.

Mercer instantly called with pocket aces and Jaka sheepishly turned over 9Spade Suit3Diamond Suit. Mercer was in great shape to take the chip lead, but instead the board fell 9Club Suit8Diamond Suit3Spade Suit5Heart Suit10Club Suit to give Jaka two pair. Mercer was eliminated and Jaka moved up to 3.4 million in chips. He ended up giving some back to end the day, but still finished with the chip lead at 3,117,000.

The money bubble took just over two hours and amazingly, short stack Tony Cousineau held on to finish in the money with just 60,000, exactly three big blinds. The unfortunate bubble boy was Maroun Jazzar, who’s big slick failed to hold up against David Benyamine’s 7-6 suited.

The remaining 18 players are all guaranteed paydays of $47,033, but they will all have their eyes on the first place prize of over $1.5 million when they return for day 5 at noon.

Notables still remaining in the field include Phil Hellmuth, Shawn Buchanan, Josh Arieh, Eric Baldwin, Matt Stout, Cliff Josephy, Olivier Busquet, Billy Baxter, David Williams, Scotty Nguyen and J.J. Liu.

Here are the chip counts for the remaining players:
