Phil Hellmuth, the all-time WSOP bracelet leader at 11, is in contention to grab an unprecedented 12th bracelet in Event No. 8, a $1,500 no-limit hold’em event.
Hellmuth enters today’s play with 556,000 in chips, currently in fifth place with just 25 people remaining of the 2,341-player starting field. Play will resume at 3 p.m. PT, and Card Player will update you on Hellmuth’s progress level-by-level as the self-described Poker Brat looks to make history at the 2010 World Series of Poker.
Hellmuth leads Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan by a single bracelet. The two former world champions are tied at No. 2 on the all-time list with 10 bracelets apiece.
Although he’s in the top five, Hellmuth still has a lot of work to do. Current chip leader Saar Wilf boasts a stack of 1,207,000 to start the day, more than double what Hellmuth has at his disposal.
Andrew Cohen, who starts the day in second place with 848,000 in chips, is also trying to make his own bit of history. Cohen, who won the 2009 casino employees event, is trying to become the first winner of that event to win a second bracelet.
Vinny Pahuja, who finished the 2008 Card Player Player of the Year race in 10th place, is one of the tournament’s short stacks, sitting in 24th place with just 110,000 in chips. Card Player blogger Josh Brikis is also in contention, currently in sixth place with 547,000 in chips.
