World Series of Poker -- Eric Buchman Wins Event No. 18Buchman Steamrolls Through Final Table in Victory |
|
There are plenty of names that come to mind when you think of fluke runs to the final table of the WSOP Main Event.
Cross Eric Buchman off that list of names.
Just six months after Buchman was one of the 2009 “November Nine”, where he came in fourth for $2.5 million, he made a much smaller, but just as significant score. On Friday night, Buchman took home his first career gold bracelet and $203,607 as he bested a field of 476 players in event no. 18, the $2,000 limit hold’em event.
Buchman came into Friday’s final table as the chip leader and his stack never dropped below the 453,000 that he entered the day with. He seemed to sit back in the first level, before making some big hands and winning big pots to eliminate Matt Grapenthien in seventh and William Jensen in sixth to accumulate just under half of the chips in play with five players remaining.
From that point forward, it seemed like nobody could stand in Buchman’s way as he continued to make big hands and seemingly won every pot. This was evident as he knocked out five of the last six players remaining at the final table.
Buchman wasn’t the only well-known name at the final table. Matt Matros, who won a bracelet in the $1,500 limit hold’em event just a week earlier, came into the final table short on chips and went out in ninth. Gary “GB2005” Bogdanski, a fixture in the online tournament world, also made it to the final table before busting in eighth place.
With the victory, Buchman’s career tournament earnings climb to $3.7 million and has proved that he is well versed in other forms of poker besides no-limit hold’em.
Here is a look at the final table results:
1. Eric Buchman – $203,607
2. Brent Courson – $125,737
3. Steven Hustoft – $90,928
4. Flavio Ferrari – $66,446
5. Hansu Chu – $49,068
6. William Jensen – $36,619
7. Matt Grapenthien – $27,609
8. Gary Bogdanski – $21,025
9. Matt Matros – $16,174
Here are the elimination hands from the final table as featured in CardPlayer.com’s live updates:
Matt Matros Eliminated in Ninth Place ($16,174)
Action folded to Matt Grapenthien, who raised, and he was met with a reraise from Matt Matros on the button. Grapenthien made the call and the two saw a flop of 9 5 2.
Grapenthien bet and Matros called with his only 29,000 left after the call. The turn was the 9 and Grapenthien bet again. Matros called and showed A J and was well behind Grapenthien’s Q Q. The river bricked off with the 6 and Matros, who won a bracelet in a limit hold’em event earlier this series, was the first casualty of the final table.
Gary Bogdanski Eliminated in Eighth Place ($21,025)
With only 21,000 in chips left, Gary Bogdanski moved all in from under-the gun and he was called by Steven Hustoft on the button. Matt Grapenthien from the small blind called and William Jensen came along from the big blind.
The flop was 10 7 4 and Grapenthien checked and called a bet from Jensen and Hustoft got out of the way.
The turn was the 4 and Grapenthien checked and folded to a bet from Jensen. Jensen showed 7 4, for a full house, which meant that although Bogdanski had the nut flush with his A J, Jensen was drawing dead when the river card was dealt.
Matt Grapenthien Eliminated in Seventh Place ($27,609)
Matt Grapenthien raised from the button and Eric Buchman three-bet from the big blind. Grapenthien moved all-in and Buchman called.
Buchman showed A Q and was well behind Grapenthien’s A K. That is, until the flop came A Q 7, putting Buchman out in front. The turn was the 6 and the river was the 5, giving the pot to Buchman and sending Grapenthien home in seventh place.
Buchman increased his stack to 950,000 and last year’s November Niner was the chip leader after the hand.
William Jensen Another Buchman Casualty, Finishes Sixth ($36,619)
Eric Buchman raised under-the-gun and William Jensen three-bet from the big blind. Buchman called and the flop came A J 8 and Buchman called a bet from Jensen.
The turn was the 3 and the rest of Jensen’s chips got into the middle.
Buchman had A 7 and Jensen was in need of some help holding Q Q. The river bricked out and Jensen was eliminated in sixth place, while Buchman increased his chip lead to 1,300,000.
Hansu Chu Eliminated in Fifth Place ($49,068)
Hansu Chu three-bet all-in after a raise from Steven Hustoft. Hustoft made the call and the cards were turned on their backs.
Chu showed the 10 9, but was dominated by Hustoft’s Q 9. The flop was K J 9 and both players needed their opponent’s kicker to make a straight. The turn was the 6 and the river was the 5, filling neither straight and Hustoft took the pot to his stack to 700,000 in chips.
Flavio Ferrari Eliminated in Fourth Place ($66,446)
Eric Buchman raised when action folded to him in the small blind, Flavio Ferrari three-bet all in, and Buchman made the call. Buchman showed 9 7 and had only three outs against Ferrari’s A 9.
The flop came K J 7 to give Buchman the lead. The turn was the 5 and the river was the 5 to give Buchman the pot and eliminate Ferrari in fourth.
Hustoft Tangles With Buchman, Eliminated in Third ($90,928)
There was a flurry of preflop raises between Steven Hustoft and Eric Buchman before they saw a flop of A Q 5. Hustoft got his last 50,000 in on the flop and Buchman called.
Buchman showed K J, giving him a flush and straight draw against the Q 8 of Hustoft. The turn card bricked off for Buchman, but the 10 on the river gave Buchman the pot and heads-up play will begin.
Brent Courson Eliminated in Second Place, Eric Buchman Wins Event No. 18
Eric Buchman raised from the button and Brent Courson three-bet from the big blind. Buchman called and saw the flop of Q 2 2. Courson bet and Buchman called.
The turn was the 7 and Courson bet the last of his chips and was called by Buchman. Buchman showed the 10 7 and Courson showed the A K. The river card was the 8 and Courson was eliminated one spot short of the bracelet.
Courson earned $125,737 for his efforts and Buchman took home $203,607 and the gold bracelet.
