World Series of Poker Main Event -- Day 6Jorgensen Leads with 9.3 Million but the Grinder, Racener, Thorson, and Kostritsyn Aren’t Too Far Behind |
|
The prospects for a November Nine stacked with professional talent are usually dashed by this point of the World Series of Poker $10,000 no-limit hold’em main event. This year things feel a little different at the end of day 6 with 78 players remaining. Not only are some big names still in contention, they also hold some of the monster stacks in the tournament.
Topping that list in notoriety is recent $50,000 Players Championship winner Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi. He handled the pressure of playing at the ESPN feature table for the majority of the day and flourished. He ends the night with 7,535,000 in chips, which is good for second place overall.
“Earlier in the tournament I was a short stack, but I play better as a short stack. Now I have a big stack but I’m pretending I still have a short stack so that I keep playing well, playing solid. I have been making the right decisions so far and hopefully I don’t make any bad decisions. It could be very costly because everyone has such big chip [stacks]. I’m very excited and I like my chances,” Mizrachi told Card Player on Day 6.
When asked about how he felt about cashing along with his brother’s Robert, Danny and Eric in the 2010 main event, the Grinder replied, “That’s a great thing, it’s a record that will probably never be broken, but I think we broke the record by just four brothers buying in, I don’t think anyone has ever done that before.”
Here is one of the hands that vaulted the Grinder up the leader board today from Card Player’s live updates:
Mizrachi Knocks Out Schreiber
Michael Mizrachi raised to 80,000 from the hijack and Matthew Schreiber moved in for 374,000 from the big blind. Mizrachi made the call and Schreiber was officially at risk.
Schreiber: A 7
Mizrachi: J 10
Mizrachi had two live cards and the flop gave him the lead when it fell 10 7 6. The turn was the 5 and the river was the 5 and Mizrachi chipped up to 5.6 million with the knockout.
Other notable players in the top 10 on the leader board include overnight chip leader Theo Jorgensen (9,300,000), John Racener (7,200,000), William Thorson (6,525,000), and Alexander Kostritsyn (5,715,000). Jorgensen won one of the biggest pots in the tournament thus far when he eliminated Fokke Beukers. From Card Player’s live updates:
Boom
Picking up the action on the turn, the board read 7 6 3 K and Fokke Beukers moved all in for about 2 million chips.
Theo Jorgensen snap-called and turned over K 6 for turned two pair. Beukers tabled A K for top pair on the turn and he was in trouble.
The river was the 4 and Beukers was eliminated. Jorgensen soared to the chip lead after that massive pot, holding 8 million.
Notable eliminations during day 6 included Robert Mizrachi, Phil Galfond, Jimmy Tran, Theo Tran, J.P. Kelly, Jesper Hougaard, Christian Harder, Todd Witteles, Juha Helppi, Matt Keikoan, Dragan Galic, and the final former world champion that was still alive heading into the day, Johnny Chan. Here was his elimination hand for Chan, from Card Player’s live updates:
Johnny Chan Eliminated
Johnny Chan and pocket aces did not get along today. He lost a huge pot when he ran his kings into Robert Pisano’s aces during the first level and had a similar situation when he busted out.
Chan open-shoved for 550,000 from the cutoff and Jonathan Driscoll snapped him off from the button. The blinds folded and the cards were turned over.
Chan: J J
Driscoll: A A
Chan fell victim to the aces again as the board ran out 7 6 3 5 7 and Chan was eliminated.
The 78 players that remain will return tomorrow at noon to play down to the final 27 players.
