Big Hands:

Defending Champ Chops It Up

Defending champion Barry Shulman found himself all in in the first level against Andy Frankenberger. However, fortunately both players were left relatively unscathed. With blinds at 50-100, the player in mid-position raised to 300. Frankenberger called, as did Shulman from the small blind. The big blind also came along for the ride and the flop came down 10-10-4.

Shulman checked, the big blind bet 450, and the original bettor folded. Frankenberger made the call and then Shulman raised it up to 2,000. The two players called and the turn was a 7. Shulman bet 10,000 and the big blind folded. Frankenberger called and the river was a 4. Shulman then shoved all in and saw a call from Frankenberger. The river card meant the two would see a chopped pot as Shulman held A-10 and Frankenberger held Q-10.

A lucky escape for Frankenberger as both players’ stacks hover around the 35,000 mark.

Early Skirmish

An unusually large pot transpired during the opening minute of play when Eli Elezra bet 1,000 on a 9 6 2 flop. Juha Helppi made the call under the gun and Robert Cooper raised to 3,000.

The turn fell A and all three players checked. The 4 was brought down the pipe by the river and Elezra bet 7,000. Helppi made the call and Cooper mucked K K face up on the table. Helppi flipped over the A but Elezra countered with A 6 and he won the pot to take an early lead with 41,000.

David Benyamine Eliminates Saar Wilf

After minimal action to open the pot, a 10-8-6 flop sat on the table with two hearts when David Benyamine bet and Saar Wilf made the call. The turn brought a 4 and Benyamine bet again. This time Wilf raised and Benyamine reraised all in.

Wilf made the call for his tournament life and flipped over pocket tens for the set. Benyamine revealed 7-5 for a straight and he won the hand, grew his stack to 65,000, and eliminated Wilf.

Carlos Mortensen on the Rise

Carlos Mortensen bet 10,000 into a pot of equal size with a board of A 10 5 8 A sitting on the table. Elijah Berg went into the tank and eventually made the call. Berg when Mortensen revealed A 10 to win the pot and grow his stack to 45,000.

High Roller Heads-Up Report — Extra Day Added

The £10,350 heads-up high roller event has reached the final match between Gus Hansen and Jim Collopy from an initial field of 103. The winner will take home the top prize worth £288,409 and the runner-up will take home £178,211 and some deflated hopes.

First Match: The first round saw Hansen take control but Collopy held on to battle for quite some time before succumbing to a first-game loss.

Second Match: This match started the same as the first with Hansen jumping out to a lead and Collopy struggling to catch up. Things went differently when he moved all in though. He doubled up twice to even up the chip counts and then he took control to win the second match and tie things up 1-1.

When the score was evened it was 3 a.m. local time last night and the two decided to stop play and return today at a time to be determined. We will bring you updates from when play finally does begin anew and then keep you posted until a winner is crowned in this prestigious tournament.

A player moved all in from under the gun and the action folded around to Liz Lieu in the small blind. She made the call and they turned over their hands:

Lieu was dominating and the board ran out 85394 and Lieu knocked out her opponent. She was up to 72,000 after the hand.

Binger’s Kings Hold

A player put in a raise from early position preflop and Nick Binger repopped from the cutoff. The initial raiser put in another raise and Binger moved all in. The call was made and the players turned their cards:

Binger was dominating and the board ran out 109210J and Binger doubled up to 33,200.

Mortensen Surrenders His Hearts

Picking up the action after the board had run out 1087QQ Carlos Mortensen led out with 3,500.

His opponent proceeded to raise it up to 15,200. Mortensen then went into a session in the tank and asked his opponent if he would show if Mortensen folded.

Mortensen did not get that luxury but he mucked his hand face up. Mortensen threw away A4 for the nut flush. He apparently put his opponent on a full house and was down to 25,000.

Williams Drops A Pot

David Williams raised to 1,050 from under the gun and he was called by three players. The flop came down AJ4 and Williams bet 3,000.

One player called and the A fell on the turn. Both players checked and the 2 came on the river.

The opponent bet 3,500 and Williams made the call. The opponent then showed AQ for trips and Williams mucked. He was at 110,000 after the hand.

Dwan On The Brink, Then Falls

Tom Dwan raised to 1,050 preflop and Lee Markholt made the call, as did the big blind. The flop came down 954 and Dwan fired 2,275.

Markholt was the only one to call and the turn was the K. Both players checked and the 7 fell on the river.

Dwan took a stab with 4,850 and Markholt made a hesitant call. It turned out to be a good one, however, as Dwan tabled J8 for a whole lot of nothing. Markholt tabled 109 for a pair of nines and took the pot. Dwan was down to just 6,000.

Then, on one of the last hands of the night, Dwan found his demise.

A player raised to 1,100 and Tom Dwan made the call from the big blind. The flop came down J108.

The remaining 169 players have bagged their chips as play has come to an end on day one. There were 241 players who started the day and they accumulated a prize pool of $2,265,400. There will be 24 places paid and the winner will take home $611,657.

Carlos Mortensen ended the day with one of the healthiest chip stacks and is near the top of the leaderboard. Scotty Nguyen, Chris Ferguson and Greg Raymer will also return on day two with a lot of chips.

Others who did not make it to the end of the first day include Tom Dwan, Phil Ivey, Maria Ho and David Benyamine.

Players will return Thursday at 3 p.m. for day two. The plan is to play down to a final table or 10 levels, whichever comes first.

Picking up the action on fourth street, Dario Alioto bet 6,000 and Nick Schulman made the call. Alioto then bet 12,000 on fifth street and Schulman called again.

Both players checked on sixth and seventh and Alioto tabled QQQ. Schulman was showing 91078 but couldn’t find any help in his hole cards and mucked.

Alioto was at 140,000 while Schulman was at 106,000.

Violette Takes One

Richard Ashby completed to 6,000 and Cyndy Violette raised to 12,000. Ashby made the call and Violette fired 6,000 on fourth street. Ashby called once more and Violette led on fifth and sixth for 12,000 each time, despite pairing up on both streets.

Ashby called both bets before both players checked the river. Despite having two pair, Violette managed to make a 9-8 low and Ashby could not beat it. Ashby mucked and Violette took in the pot, improving to 160,000.

Brunson Hits 300k

Todd Brunson, Matt Glantz and Al Barbieri were all involved in a hand. Here is how their boards looked:

Brunson completed to 6,000 and both opponents called. On fourth street, Glantz led out with 6,000 and both opponents called. Barbieri led for 12,000 on fifth street and only Brunson stuck around. Brunson led for 12,000 on sixth street and Barbieri made the call.

On seventh, Brunson led out again for 12,000 and Barbieri released his hand, leaving himself with 50,000. Brunson took in the pot and was at 300,000.

Mortensen Takes The Chip Lead

Carlos Mortensen, Jordan Smith and Dario Alioto all got involved in a hand. Each player saw it to the river with chips going into the middle on every street.

Mortensen turned over a spade flush to go with an 8-7 low and both opponents mucked. Mortensen scooped the pot and he was at 540,000 which was good for the overall chip lead.

Smith was crippled and was eliminated later in the level.

Mortensen bet fourth and was called and the last of his chips were committed on fifth street.

Mortesen was way ahead on fourth street, but Katchalov caught good and made a better eight low than Mortenesen. Mortensen was eliminated from the tournament with an extra $102,237 to his name.

Eugene Katchalov brought it in and Ian Gordon completed. Richard Ashby made the call and so did Katchalov. Gordon bet on fourth street and was raised by Ashby. Katchalov folded and Gordon made the call.

Gordon check-called fifth and both players checked sixth and seventh.

Pescatori Misreads Hand, Still Gets Half

We caught up with the action on the turn and found Max Pescatori leading out on a 793J board. He was called by the player on his left, Scotty Nguyen, and Barry Shulman.

The river was the 8 and Pescatori fired another 1,000 bullet and was called by Nguyen and Shulman.

“Straight and a deuce-five,” said Pescatori as he tabled the 56K2.

“Deuce-three,” replied Nguyen as he tabled the A5103, giving him a better low than Pescatori.

“This is so sick,” said Shulman as he mucked his cards. “I should have just raised the turn.”

“I misread my hand on the turn when I bet,” said Pescatori as he was taking half of the pot.

Nguyen has 40,000, Pescatori has 25,000, and Shulman slipped to 15,000

Hellmuth Flushed Out

Phil Hellmuth raised from under-the-gun and was called by one player. They saw a flop of 963 and both players checked.

The turn was the Q and Hellmuth bet and was called. The river was the K and the same action happened.

“Straight,” announced Hellmuth. But before he could turn over his cards, his opponent tabled J6A3, good for a flush.

Mortensen Doubles Up

On a flop of KJ4, Carlos Mortensen checked, the next player bet, then there was a fold, and then a raise by Freddy Deeb. Mortensen called two bets cold and the original bettor tossed in a call.

The turn was the 2 and Mortensen bet and was called by Deeb and the other player.

The river was the 8 and Mortensen bet and was all-in. The next player raised and Deeb called.

Deeb mucked after Mortensen showed the 10-9-8-8 and the other player showed the A-K-5-3. Mortensen chopped the pot with the other player, who took half with the nut low and is up to 7,000.
