Baron Gets It In Good, Gets Unlucky Isaac Baron raised to 1,700 from middle position and was three-bet by a player in the blinds to 4,800. Baron asked how much he had left, and after getting an answer, he made the call. The flop was 938 and the player in the blinds checked over to Baron. Baron bet 4,800 and was check-raised to 15,000. Baron bet enough to put the player all-in and he called, putting in his last 30,950 on the flop. Baron showed 33, giving him a set and the all-in player held JJ. The turn was the 10, but the river was the J, giving the player in the blinds a bigger set and taking the pot. Baron dropped to 35,000 after the hit. Glantz Makes a Good Fold Matt Glantz called a bet of 2,200 on the turn from his opponent with the board reading AJA5. The river was the Q and the other player in the hand gently places an orange chip worth 5,000 onto the felt. Glantz quickly released his hand. It was a good decision since the player showed him one card – the A. Glantz is still hovering right around his 30,000 original starting stack. Mizrachi Grinding Back Up On a three-way flop of Q45 the small blind bet 1,500 and Michael Mizrachi called from the big blind. The third player in the hand raised to 8,400 and the small blind folded but Mizrachi called. On the 3 turn both players checked, but on the 3 river Mizrachi bet big — 20,000 to be exact. His opponent called and the Grinder showed 63 for a flopped straight draw that turned into trip threes on the river. After a rough start to the day, Mizrachi took the pot and boosted his stack to 97,000. Pham Busts With Aces David Pham raised to 1,525 and another player reraised to 4,525. Pham quickly moved over the top all in for not much more. His opponent called. Their hands: Pham: AA Pham had his opponent dominated, that is until the board ran out 10QKJ to give Pham’s opponent the straight, then the 7 river added an unnecessary flush, cracking Pham’s aces and sending him to the rail. Pham ended the 2010 WSOP with just one cash. Check out his results here. Ho Staying Alive, Doubles Maria Ho got all in for 15,225 preflop against one opponent. Their hands: Ho: AK Ho was a big favorite, and the low board kept it that way, running 68632. Ho’s hand took down the pot and she doubled to around 31,000. Naujoks Can’t Stand Check-Raise After one player checked, Ralph Perry bet 5,000 on a flop of J62. Sandra Naujoks made the call in position and the other player folded. The turn was the 3 and Perry checked. Naujoks fired 5,000 and Perry came back with a check-raise to 15,000. Naujoks went into the tank for a minute or so before releasing her hand. She slipped to 40,000 while Perry climbed to 140,000. Ted Forrest Eliminated Ted Forrest got all of his chips in preflop with 55 against his opponents AK. After the ESPN cameras got there, the dealer put out a flop of Q102, giving his opponent a ton of outs to improve. The K on the turn gave his opponent the best hand and left Forrest with one out. The A on the river gave the pot to his opponent and Forrest was eliminated. If you check out the Card Player poker odds calculator, you can see that even though the A-K didn’t pair up on the flop, it was still a statistical favorite to win the hand. Forrest is eliminated from the main event and this caps off a very disappointing series for Forrest, who only made one cash in 2010, in the $2,500 2-7 triple draw lowball event for $9,972. Left in the Deck: Seiver Has a Future In Curling After passing by Scott Seiver’s table, we overheard him talking with David Bach about making a run at the U.S. Olympic Curling team. “I have alot of bowling experience,” said Bach. “That should give me an edge.” “It probably does, we would just have to figure out who is going to sweep,” replied Seiver. There was a joking tone, but it wouldn’t surprise us to see those two on the ice in four years. Darryll Fish also called from the big blind and the three players saw a flop of J73. All three players checked and the turn was the A. Action was checked to the raiser who fired 1,650. The flop was K32, giving Phillips the lead. The turn was the 10 and the river was the 6 to double up Phillips to 19,000. Action has been fast and furious in just the first few minutes of this level. Expect to see tons of bustouts and double ups. A few hands later, Phillips raised to 1,180 from the hijack and the player in the big blind made the call. The flop came down AJ2 and the big blind checked. Phillips bet 1,500 and the big blind check-raised to 3,300. Phillips thought for a bit and then repopped it to 7,500. The big blind thought for a few moments of his own and then released his hand, turning over the A as he did so. Phillips took in the pot and he was at 24,000. Ho Can’t Call Picking up the action after the flop came down J93, the player in seat 7 led out for 2,200. Maria Ho was on the button and she made the call while the player in seat 5 mucked. The turn was the J and seat 7 led for 3,300. Ho took some time to think but eventually released her hand. She dropped the pot and was at 93,000. Baldwin Finally Gives The Cameras Something Positive After the flop came down 543, the player in seat 5 bet 1,300. Eric Baldwin made the call and both players saw the A on the turn. Seat 5 led out for 3,000 and Baldwin made the call again. The river was the 7 and seat 5 checked. Baldwin did the same and seat 5 tabled Q7 for a rivered pair of sevens. It was no good, however, as Baldwin turned A7 for a rivered two pair and he took the pot. “The curse is finally over,” Baldwin said to the ESPN crew surrounding the table. “I finally won one with you guys here.” He was at 70,000 after the hand. Cada Gives One Up Reigning champion Joe Cada was in the small blind heads up with the big blind. On a flop of 27K Cada checked and the big blind bet 1,550. Cada made the call and the 6 hit on the turn. Cada again checked and his opponent fired 3,100 this time. With the ESPN cameras all over him, Cada folded. Despite the loss, he sat with a healthy 72,000 in chips. Sexton Getting Short, Then Busts Mike Sexton made it 1,200 to go from under the gun and action folded around to the big blind, who called. The flop came 28Q and both players checked. On the 10 turn the big blind bet 1,000 and Sexton quickly folded. The hand dropped Sexton to just 13,000 in chips. He would bust a few hands later when his pocket kings were cracked by his opponent’s pocket nines. Baron Makes Big Call, Wins Massive Pot Isaac Baron called a large preflop raise from the player in seat 4 and saw a flop of K98. Baron checked to seat four, who bet 8,250. Baron thought for a moment before making the call. On the K turn Isaac again checked and seat four checked behind him this time. The 5 fell on the river and Baron checked to seat 4, who took his time and bet 11,350. After he tanked for a minute or so, Baron finally called and showed 92 for two pair. Seat 4 mucked and Baron raked in a massive pot, taking most of his opponent’s chips. Baron had around 134,000 in chips after the hand. Chan Picking Up Where He Left Off Johnny Chan left his day 1 as one of the tournament’s chip leaders. He picked up where he left off early in day 2a. Chan limped in from the small blind and the big blind checked the action. The flop ran 65A and both players checked. On the 2 turn Chan fired out 1,000 and his opponent folded. It was a small win, but Chan now has around 164,000 in chips. Scotty Takes One Down A player raised to 1,200 preflop and Scotty Nguyen made the call from the small blind. Darryll Fish also called from the big blind and the three players saw a flop of J73. All three players checked and the turn was the A. Action was checked to the raiser who fired 1,650. Nguyen made the call and Fish mucked. The river was the J and Nguyen led out with 6,200. His opponent mucked the A and Nguyen showed some common courtesy by showing his J. Nguyen took the pot and was at 25,200. Somerville Surges All we were able to see was Jason Somerville showing down 35 on a board of 3-3-4-5-6. His opponent mucked and Somerville raked in a big pot. Somerville is now up to 87,400 with his newly acquired chips. Tiffany Michelle Doubles There were four limpers in front of her and then Tiffany Michelle raised to 3,500 on the button. The player in the small blind made it 5,700 more to Michelle and she quickly called. Michelle said call and then realized that she had said call and lamented how she had intended to move in for her remaining 5,500. The flop was 476 and the small blind moved all-in and Michelle called instantly. Michelle tabled 77 and the player in the small blind showed AA, putting Michelle squarely in the lead. The turn was the 4 and the river was the J to double up Michelle to 30,000. Level 5 Update: Isaac Baron Wins Huge PotJun 17, '09 Blinds: 250-500 Players Remaining: 225 out of 362 Chip Counts: 1. Isaac Baron – 80,000 Average Chip Count: 24,200 Notable Eliminations: Erik Seidel Big Hands: Isaac Baron Wins Huge Pot On a board of J728, a player bet 8,000 into Isaac Baron on the button. Baron asked him for a count and then moved all-in for about 35,000 total. Baron’s opponent went into the tank and said, “I have eight outs.” He eventually called with his correct read on the situation and tabled the AK1010 for a pair of tens and flush draw. Baron turned over the nuts of Q1079 and needed to dodge a diamond to win a massive pot. The J hit the river and Baron is now up to 80,000 in chips. Yevgeniy Timoshenko Eliminated On a board of Q107, action was checked to Yevgeniy Timoshenko who bet 2,250. The big blind reraised to 8,500 and Nam Le folded from under-the-gun. Timoshenko went into the tank before finally committing the rest of his chips. The reigning WPT Championship winner tabled the AQ8J, while his opponent tabled the Q10A9. Timoshenko was behind against his opponents two pair but had outs for a straight. The turn was a disaster as the Q fell, eliminating all of Timoshenko’s straight draws. Timoshenko could only hope for a jack for the win or chop against his opponent’s full house with an ace. The 4 bricked on the river and Timoshenko was eliminated. Player Tags: Nam Le, Isaac Baron, Yevgeniy Timoshenko Level 19 Update: Peter Jetten Doubles Up, 12 Players LeftJun 19, '09 Blinds: 6,000-12,000 Players Remaining: 12 out of 363 Chip Counts: 1. Rifat Palevic — 775,000 Average Chip Count: 453,750 Notable Eliminations: Evan Sofer Big Hands: Peter Jetten Cracks Aces to Double Through Isaac Baron After a Van Marcus limp, Peter Jetten raised to 54,000. The action folded around to Baron who made it 197,000 to go. Both blinds and Van Marcus’ cards went into the muck and the action was back to Jetten, who proceeded to go into the tank. After a couple minutes of thinking, Jetten announced “all in” and Baron made the call instantly. Baron turned over AA92 and Jetten had AK105. The flop was 4J7, leaving Jetten in bad shape. The turn was the 3, giving Jetten some hope, and the river completed Jetten’s flush as the 10 fell and Jetten was able to double up. Evan Sofer Eliminated After Richard Austin limped in, Evan Sofer made a pot-sized raise. After everybody else got out of the way, Austin raised enough to put Sofer all in. Sofer made the call and showed KJ109 and Austin showed AA87. Unlike Jetten, Sofer was unable to crack aces, as he was drawing dead to the river and was eliminated in 13th place. He will take home $24,448 for his efforts. Player Tags: Evan Sofer, Isaac Baron, Peter Jetten Level 16 Update: Three Tables LeftJun 18, '09 Level 16 Update Blinds: 3,000-6,000 Players Remaining: 27 out of 363 Chip Counts: 1. Jesper Hougaard — 500,000 Average Chip Count: 201,666 Notable Eliminations: Jeff Lisandro Big Hands:
After taking a three-handed flop of 257, Van Marcus leads out or 27,000. Sorel Mizzi gets out of the way and Isaac Baron asks him how much he has left. After a moment of contemplation, Baron raised to 80,000 and Marcus moves all in and was instantly called by Baron. Van Marcus turns over 22Q5, good for bottom set and had to fade the big draw that Baron showed when he exposed the 64K7. The board bricked off for Baron is it came 10K and Van Marcus doubled up. Ralph Perry Punishes Limpers to Take Down Pot After five players limped in, it was up to Ralph Perry in the big blind. Perry took his option and decided to make it 30,000. Sorel Mizzi, after limping in under the gun, tanked for a few moments before making the call. Isaac Baron mucked, as did Fabrice Soulier, and the small blind decided to make the call. The flop came down K37 and the small blind checked. Perry cut out some chips and bet out 75,000. Sorel Mizzi pondered his options for a minute or so before finally releasing his hand, and the small blind quickly mucked, allowing Perry to rake the pot.
Cliff Josephy and Jesper Hougaard seem to be mixing it up a fair amount. On a flop of A103, Hougaard bet out and is called by Josephy. The turn is the 5 and Hougaard bet 35,000, which is once again called by Josephy. The river is the J and Hougaard fired one last bullet, this time 85,000. Josephy thought for a few moments before calling. Hougaard announced “aces up” and Josephy said “No good, I have a straight,” as he tabled the QJK2, which ironically was good for a flush. A few hands later, on a flop of K109, after Hougaard checked, Josephy bet 35,000. Hougaard called and the third party got out of the way. The 9 fell on the turn and both players checked. The 2 was the river card and Hougaard checked again. Josephy bet 40,000 and was called by Hougaard. Josephy just mucked his cards when he was called and Hougaard tabled the QJK2, which was good for a straight.
