Jun 11, '10
Event No. 23 ($2,500 six-handed limit hold’em) at the 2010 World Series of Poker will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday, June 11. Players will begin with 7,500 in tournament chips and blinds will begin at 50-75 with 75-150 limits. Levels will be 60-minutes long and there will be a 20-minute break after every two levels. There will be a 60-minute dinner break after level 4 on day 1. Here is a look at the schedule for the event:
Friday, June 11, 5 p.m.: Day 1 (play 8 levels)
Saturday, June 12, 3 p.m.: Day 2 (play down to final table or through 10 levels)
Sunday, June 13, 3 p.m.: Final Table
In 2009 this event attracted 367 players and the tournament was won by Brock Parker, who took home $223,697. CardPlayer.com will bring you a summary of the action at the dinner break and end of play each day for this event.
Four players saw a flop of Q97 and everybody checked to the player on the button who bet 75 and was called by Gavin Smith. The turn card was the 6 and Smith checked again.
The button bet 200 and Smith called one more time and saw the 10 hit the river. Smith checked and button took a minute or so to bet 400. Smith, visibly displeased at the bet, eventually let his hand hit the muck.
Gavin Smith Eliminated
Gavin Smith got the rest of his short stack in on a flop of 1099 with the 108 and was called by an opponent with the A10. Smith failed to draw out and was eliminated early on Day 1A.
Bad Board, but Devo’s Kings Hold
After Brock Parker limped under the gun, Bryan Devonshire raised to 100 on the button. The player in the small blind called, as did Parker. All three players checked it down as the board ran out A32J10.
Devonshire tabled the KK, which was good for the pot.
Tommy Vedes Loses Some Chips
On a paired board, Tom Vedes bet 100 with the A7 for jacks and sevens and was called by an opponent with two eights in the hole. Vedes lost the small pot and is down to 2,700.
Elimination at Lauren Kling’s Table
Two players got it all in on a flop of QJ3, with one tabling QJ for top two pair and the other exposed pocket threes for bottom set. Bottom set held up and one of the first casualties of the tournament has hit the rail.
Lex Veldhuis Eliminates a Player
Lex Veldhuis was in the big blind with about 2,800 when the button raised to 75. The small blind called and Veldhuis raised to 325. The button made a quick call and the small blind folded. The flop came 942 and Veldhuis continuation bet 425. The button made the call. The 5 hit the turn and this time Veldhuis bet 850 and the button took awhile before calling. The river brought the A and Veldhuis took some time to consider before moving all in for 1,625. The button tanked for a few minutes and finally made the call for his tournament life. Veldhuis tabled A5 for two pair. His opponent mucked and Veldhuis raked in the large pot. He is at 5,700 after the hand.
Left in the Deck:
One Big-Blind Hand
Over at Brock Parker and Bryan Devonshire’s table (Green 197), a hand was played with just one big blind. The tournament staff was called over to look at the problem in the early stages of the 2010 World Series of Poker.
Tough Table Draws and Notable Entrants
Prior to his elimination, poker pros Gavin Smith, Kara Scott, and Allen Kessler were sitting at the same table among a sea of unknowns. At the table right next door sits a member of the Card Player Family — Allyn Jaffrey Shulman. Allyn’s husband and Card Player Publisher, Barry Shulman, is also in the field. Some other tough draws include a table with Joe Bartholdi, David Plastik, Jamie Rosen, and Soheil Shamseddin. As well as a table that includes Tommy Vedes, Andy Black, Tom Marchese and Brandon Cantu. For such a big field, some unknowns got a pretty unlucky table draw.
Lex Veldhuis Talks with Adam and Diego
Poker pro Lex Veldhuis discusses the 2009 WSOP TV coverage that built a ton of buzz around his aggressive game, his lighthearted rivalry with Eli Elezra and how he took advantage of being on TV in a recent episode of ‘The Scoop’ brought to you by Full Tilt Poker.
Todd Terry raised under the gun and Brock Parker reraised to 28,000. Mortensen reraised to 68,000 and Terry mucked. Parker moved all in for 150,000 and Mortensen made the call. Their cards:
Mortensen: AA
Parker: KK
Board: J73A8
Mortensen won the hand with his aces and Parker was eliminated. Mortensen held 680,000 after the hand.

Marcin Horecki Scores
Team PokerStars pro Marcin Horecki raised from the cutoff preflop and John Leathart made the call on the button. The flop rolled out A74 and Horecki bet 1,500. Leathart made the call and the 2 fell on the turn. Horecki bet 3,000 and Leathart made the call before the river brought the 9. Both players checked and Horecki flipped over K9 to top the 107 of his opponent.
Marcel Luske Grabs a Pot
A flop of 1063 sat on the table and Marcel Luske had his opponent covered all in. Their cards:
Luske: 66
Opponent: AJ
Turn and River: Q7
Luske won the hand with his set, eliminated his opponent, and grew his stack to 75,000.
Daniel Negreanu Caught in a Storm of Controversy
The board read A102A5 when Maurizio Lucatelli bet 4,000. Daniel Negreanu raised to 14,000 and Lucatelli began to reveal his cards (he thought Negreanu had simply called). The dealer stopped him and Lucatelli stopped turning over his cards, but Negreanu said he had already seen them.
Lucatelli then went into the tank and reraised 30,000 more. “He has an ace of diamonds and five or four of spades,” said Negreanu, as the floor was called to come make a decision on the hand. A ruling was then made that Lucatelli could only call and he quickly did just that.
He flipped over A10 for a full house and Negreanu revealed 4-3 for a straight.

Big Hands:
Alaei Tumbling
Picking up the action on the turn, the board read 3227. Daniel Alaei bet 3,600 from the small blind and the big blind raised to 11,000. The player in seat 5 mucked and the action was back on Alaei. He tanked for a few moments before finally releasing his hand. He was back to 30,000 at that point.
Later, the board ran out J42Q8 and there was 17,000 in the pot. Alaei checked from the big blind and seat 5 bet 5,000. Alaei tanked a little more and mucked his hand again. Alaei was down to 22,000 after that hand.
Kostritsyn Takes A Pot, Still Short Stacked
The player in seat 9 raised to 600 from middle position and Alexander Kostritsyn made the call from the big blind. The flop came down 984 and both players checked. The turn was the 8 and Kostritsyn led out with 1,000. Seat 9 mucked and Kostritsyn took the small pot, but he was still short with 4,500.
Straight Flush For Parker
Picking up the action on the turn, the board read J763 and the player in seat 8 bet 800. Brock Parker made the call and the 4 fell on the river. Parker led out this time with 1,500 and seat 9 mucked.
Parker then showed 75 for a straight flush and raked in the pot. He was at 34,000.
John Salley Eliminated
John Salley was down to his last 1,050 and was all in preflop with 103 and was up against his opponent’s KK.
The board ran out 6A839 and Salley was sent to the rail early on day 1.
Elky Gets Rivered
On a flop of JJ7, Bertrand “Elky” Grospellier raised to 2,700 after an under-the-gun player bet 1,000. Elky was met with another raise, as the under-the-gun player raised to 5,250, and Elky made the call.
The turn was the K and the player checked and called Elky’s 5,250. The river was the 10 and both players checked. It was a good check by Elky since his opponent turned over AQ. Elky was in shock and got up from the table to blow off some steam.
Level 2 Update: Negreanu and Greenstein Both With Rockets
Jun 15, '09
Blinds: 150-300
Players Remaining: 175 out of 175

Greenstein made the instant call and both players saw a 8 hit the turn. Negreanu bet 600, Greenstein reraised 600 and Negreanu called quickly. The 2 hit the river and Negreanu checked. Greenstein threw out another 600 and Negreanu said, “against almost any other player I would raise here,” before making the call. Greenstein tabled the AA and Negreanu immediately said that they weren’t any good as he exposed his own pocket aces with the AA. The two split the small pot.
Brock Parker vs. Nikolay Evdakov
Yevginiy Timoshenko raises to 600 from late position and Nikolay Evdakov reraises to 900 from the cutoff. Brock Parker calls from the big blind, as does Timoshenko. The flop comes 663, Evdakov bets 300 and Parker riases (check-raise). Timoskenko folds and Evdakov calls. The turn is the 2, Parker bets 600, Evdakov calls. The river is the 5, and once again Parker bets 600 and Evdakov calls. Parker turns over 77 for two pair and rakes the pot.
