Al BarbieriThe 2010 L.A. Poker Classic began on Jan. 20 at the Commerce Casino in Southern California. There have been 14 winners crowned in 15 events during the last two weeks, and thousands of players have entered the preliminaries. The tournament kicked off with a bang two weeks ago. The $300 no-limit hold’em event with a $1 million-guaranteed prize pool attracted 5,847 players, and the champion was Darrell Cain, who took home $363,936 for first place.

This has been the largest preliminary event during the early stretch of the tournament series, by far. The next largest was a $300 no-limit hold’em double-stack event that took place on Feb. 1 and attracted 440 players.

The player who has performed the best so far at the Commerce is Al Barbieri (pictured left). He won the $300 seven-card stud eight-or-better event on Jan. 27, topping a field of 150 players to win $12,970. On Jan. 31, Barbieri entered the $500 no-limit hold’em event with a $200,000-guaranteed prize pool and won that event, as well. His second tournament victory awarded him $54,700 in prize money for defeating 364 opponents.

Another notable victory during the preliminaries came when Eddie Alaei won the $500 no-limit hold’em event on Jan. 27. Alaei is the father of poker professional Daniel Alaei, who holds two World Series of Poker gold bracelets. Eddie was awarded $41,210 in prize money for a topping a field of 296 players.

There are still 35 events left on the schedule at Commerce, and you can see the full lineup on the tournament’s landing page. Upcoming highlights include the $10,000 H.O.R.S.E. championship, the World Poker Tour Celebrity Invitational, the $10,000 heads-up no-limit hold’em championship, and the WPT L.A. Poker Classic no-limit hold’em championship event, which begins on Feb. 26. Card Player will bring you full live updates from the heads-up no-limit hold’em championship and the WPT championship events.
