Dear Day for Dubliner
The Irish may not have had their finest
World Series of Poker in living memory, but stop to consider the luck of one Dublin regular who got wheeled out of every cash game he entered.
His luck continued in all of the tournaments he played, and with copious amounts of alcohol failing to dull the pain induced by his ever-decreasing bankroll - and whilst confirming that his roommate was stuck so much in a cash game that he would not be returning for hours - he decided some relaxation therapy with a lady he met at the infamous "hookers bar" in the Rio was very much in order.
Hours later, when he awoke long after his temporary room guest had left, he discovered that he had incurred another $4,000 bad beat, what with finding the contents of his wallet had been rifled.
Feeling mightily vexed, things got worse when his roommate then returned to the room, immediately asking: "What have you done with my Rolex? I left it next to the bathroom sink when I went out!"
Luke in the Frame
Rumours are abound that Luke Ivory, the former Fitzwilliam cardroom manager, will be at the tournament-directing helm of the 2008
Paddy Power Irish Open.
Cool Hand Luke's
Luke Ivory, who parted company with the Fitzwilliam Card Club and Casino after a four-year relationship, is opening his own card club in 81 Merrion Square, the former home of the Merrion Casino.
The new venture, called Cool Hand Luke's, is independently owned and will offer both poker and gaming.
"The emphasis is poker, that will be the priority," said Ivory. "We intend to bring poker to the public; by that I mean a good spread of games - sit-and-gos, cash games, and tournaments - to suit absolutely every pocket. We also will be looking for input from the players. It's early, but a website will follow, and we are looking forward to developing relationships with potential sponsors and online cardrooms."
Cool Hand Luke's, a short walk from the Fitzwilliam, will be open from 7 p.m. until 8 a.m. Ivory can be contacted on: +353 87 8115817.
Online - In-flight
Dublin-based budget airline Ryanair plans to introduce in-flight online poker and gaming in the hope that it can offer passengers free flights, covering its costs by the revenue gambling generates.
According to Chief Executive Michael O'Leary, Ryanair hopes to launch a gambling service in the next 12 to 18 months, provided it can devise a payment system that allows it to debit a passenger's credit card before the plane lands.
New Schedule Hits the Jackpot
The Jackpot Card Club, closed in late July for a face-lift, has altered its weekly schedule as follows:
The Main Man in the Main Event
Sylvester Geoghegan from Mullingar, Co Westmeath was the top Irish performer in the
WSOP main event, finishing in 122nd place, earning almost $60,000. Geoghegan also finished 13th in the championship Omaha event, earning another $30,000.
Technically,
WSOP winner Jerry Yang could be considered Irish, having been born in Laos.
