Anyone who's been in the poker world for a long time knows Howard "Tahoe" Andrew, who began playing poker at the age of 21 in Lake Tahoe in the 1950s, hence his nickname. Today he lives in Walnut Creek, California, which he fondly refers to as the "Cadillac of Northern California." Tahoe still plays lots of poker, and can be found at the final table quite often. He was inducted into the Seniors Hall of Fame in 2003.

Tahoe is the father of three beautiful daughters and the grandfather of eight. He graduated from San Francisco State with a B.S. in math and physics. I had a chance to chat with him during the recent Legends of Poker tournament at The Bicycle Casino.

Linda Johnson: I've heard that you were a Hollywood movie star at an early age. Tell me about it.

Tahoe: Yes, as a baby, my twin brother and I were featured in Last Days of Pompeii in 1934. I also was in Reckless with Jean Harlow.

LJ: Why did you start playing poker?

Tahoe: I started playing poker at a young age and noticed how badly everyone played. This was before the days of books and videos and magazines. I sat in amazement and watched people give their money away. I really enjoyed the people and got to meet characters from all walks of life. I play for fun, but have been quite successful.

LJ: What major titles have you won?

Tahoe: My biggest accomplishment was winning a gold bracelet in the businessman's event at the World Series of Poker. I also had victories at the Super Bowl of Poker and Stairway to the Stars.

LJ: What is your favorite poker game?

Tahoe: I really only play tournaments these days, and I prefer Omaha eight-or-better, no-limit hold'em, and stud eight-or-better.

LJ: How do you prepare for the final table?

Tahoe: I try to be well-rested and pay attention to my opponents.

LJ: What is your table image?

Tahoe: I think I'm well-liked by most of the players. I probably play a little too tight, which can be a weakness.

LJ: Who are some of the players and industry leaders you respect the most?

Tahoe: Vince Burgio, Chuck Thompson, Al Jay, Tuna Lund, Jan Fisher, and Matt Savage.

LJ: What do you think could be done to make poker better?

Tahoe: It continues to get better and better, and the television exposure certainly is helping to grow the market. I think we need to get rid of the cigars and backroom stigma that still exists to a small extent.

LJ: When you aren't playing poker, what do you like to do?

Tahoe: I like chess, but I'm no good at it. The same goes for tennis. I had a heart attack recently and it really ticked me off, so now I'm trying to stay healthy and live a happy life. This involves going to the health club three times a week and getting plenty of exercise.

LJ: Is there anything you would like to say in closing?

Tahoe: Yes, I hope you publish this in Card Player soon, before I cash my final chips in.

Change of subject: I wish you all a very happy Thanksgiving, and hope you take the time to think about all the things in your life for which you are thankful. I am very grateful for all the wonderful people in my life … you know who you are!
