Adam GeyerIn 2008, tournament pro Adam Geyer was just two tables away from winning the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure main event. Instead, a bad beat at a crucial time saw his tournament run end in 15th place.

Alexandre Gomes raised to 102,000 on the button and Geyer reraised to 350,000 from the small blind. Gomes called and the flop fell 10Club Suit6Diamond Suit5Spade Suit. Geyer continued with a bet of 625,000 and Gomes moved all in for his last 1,479,000 total.

Geyer made the easy call with pocket jacks and Gomes was facing elimination with his ADiamond Suit5Club Suit for bottom pair. Instead, the turn and river fell 8Club SuitAClub Suit, giving Gomes two pair and the monster pot. To make matters worse, his friends jumped over the rail to high-five him, celebrating wildly right in Geyer’s face.

It’s been two years and now Geyer is the chip leader entering day 3 of the PCA main event. Card Player caught up with him shortly before play to discuss his run and his game plan for the rest of the tournament.

Julio Rodriguez: Do you still think about that bad beat you suffered in the 2008 PCA main event?

Adam Geyer: Yeah, it was a sick moment for me. I felt like I wanted to vomit. Alexandre Gomes spiked a five-outer on me for the chip lead with two tables left. He went on to finish fourth for $750,000 and I had to settle for 15th place. It’s one of those moments that you think about from time to time, but being back here two years later, it pops through your head a little more often.

Adam GeyerJR: What do you think of your competition so far in this tournament?

AG: Every table I’ve been at has been pretty decent so far. It’s usually been myself, seven other young online guys an maybe an older pro. These online qualifiers are pretty good players, but you have to remember that a lot of them are playing in one of their first live events ever, so even if they are a good online pro, they still have a lot to learn about live play.

JR: What’s your game plan entering day 3?

AG: Today I was given a pretty great table draw. I really only recognized Casey [Jarzabek] in the one seat. I think I’m going to take some time to feel everybody out and see where the weak spots are. After that, my goal is to keep moving forward and accumulating chips. I’m not sure how I’m going to play against these guys, but I have no problem taking what they give me.
