Barry ShulmanIn 2009, Barry Shulman took down the World Series of Poker Europe main event for his second gold bracelet and a first-place prize of $1,278,106. That same year, his son Jeff Shulman final tabled the WSOP main event, becoming a member of the November Nine and earning a score of $1,953,395 for his fifth place finish.

Three years later, both Shulmans are at it again, this time having both final tabled different WSOP events on the same day. Barry finds himself in the middle of the pack of event no. 19, the $1,500 no-limit hold’em tournament. Jeff is among the chip leaders in event no. 20, the $5,000 limit hold’em.

Before reaching the final table, each player was seated just 15 feet apart on neighboring tables, allowing them to sweat each others progress. After reaching the final table, however, they were forced to split between the Amazon and the Pavillion rooms at the Rio, leaving the status updates to friends and family on the rail.

Jeff ShulmanWhen asked if either was feeling any nerves or pressure to put on a good performance while the other was still in their tournament, both players insisted that they were focused on the task at hand and not concerned with making poker history.

However, when asked who they would want to win if only one could home with a bracelet, the competitors answers were less than diplomatic. “I guess as long as he agrees to keep me in his will, then I’d rather he take it down,” said Jeff, recognizing that the first-place prize of $559,514 in event no. 19 dwarfs the $206,760 up for grabs in event no. 20.

The elder Shulman, on the other hand, declined to say. “There’s too much politics involved to answer that question,” said Barry with a laugh. “I hope we both do well.”

The father and son duo have combined tournament earnings of $7.8 million. In 2005, both Doyle and Todd Brunson won WSOP bracelets in the same series. In 2010, Irving and Rich Rice each made the same final table.

UPDATE: Barry Shulman ultimately finished 8th in event no. 19, earning $53,669 and 180 Player of the Year points. Jeff Shulman finished 3rd in event no. 20 after a long three-handed battle, receiving $92,562 and 416 POY points for his deep run.
