In June of 2023, Colin Robinson navigated his way through a field of thousands down to the final two in the World Series of Poker $1,500 buy-in no-limit hold’em Monster Stack event. He ended up falling just short of the gold, finishing second for $718,649. Just over a year later, Robinson managed to make it back down to heads-up play at the WSOP, this time in the $2,500 no-limit hold’em event. The Anthem, Arizona resident was able to come out on top in his second go-round, earning $667,963 and his first bracelet for the win.
Robinson now has $2,215,711 in lifetime tournament earnings, with the majority ($1,737,103) coming from his 33 in-the-money finishes at the WSOP.
In addition to the money and the hardware, Robinson also scored 1,620 Card Player Player of the Year points as the champion of this event. This was enough to catapult him inside the top 150 in the 2024 POY rankings presented by Global Poker despite no prior qualified scores this year.
The 2,229-entry turnout for this event resulted in a prize pool of $4,959,525 which was paid out among the top 335 finishers. Several bracelet winners were among the 21 players that made it down to the third and final day. Those that fell short of the final table, including Jin Hoon Lee (21st), Rui Ferreira (20th), Mike Holtz (17th), Andre Akkari (12th), and Jose ‘Nacho’ Barbero (11th).
2023 World Poker Tour Gardens Poker Championship winner Ky Nguyen hit the rail in 10th place to set the official final table. Ivan Stankov then lost a big preflop race with pocket queens against the A-K suited of bracelet winner Carl Shaw to finish ninth ($61,906).
Gonzalo Almada was left on fumes when his K-J lost to the Q-9 suited of Shaw. He soon got all-in with 10-7 suited trailing the A-10 of Shaw. Almada picked up an open-ended straight draw on the turn, but bricked on the river to finish eighth ($79,537).
Robinson’s first knockout at the final table saw his A-K best the 10-9 of recent $1,500 super turbo bounty freezeout bracelet winner Peter Park (7th – $103,279). He followed that up by drawing out on the A-K of Akshat Bajaj with A-Q, flopping a queen and holding to narrow the field to five. Bajaj earned $135,522 as the sixth-place finisher.
Two-time bracelet winner and Card Player Publisher Barry Shulman’s run in this event concluded in fifth place. He got all-in with A8 facing the KQ of Robinson. The board ran out K106Q2to give Robinson two pair and the pot. Shulman earned $179,687 for his 64th cash at the WSOP, growing his overall tournament earnings to nearly $6.2 million in the process.
Vitalijs Zavorotnijs was the next to square off in all-in combat against Robinson. His K-Q suited was dominated by A-K. Zavorotnijs turned an open-ended straight draw, but a deuce on the end saw him knocked out in fourth place ($240,707). The 2019 WPT Barcelona champion now has more than $2.2 million in career cashes.
The surge continued for Robinson when his A5 held against the KQ of John Reiter. Neither player connected with the board and Reiter was sent to the rail with $325,744 for his third-place showing.
Heads-up play began with Robinson holding roughly a 6:1 chip lead over Shaw. Just a few hands into their match, Robinson shoved from the button and Shaw called with Q10. Robinson’s Q7 was dominated, but the K985A runout saw him nail running clubs to make a winning flush for the win.
Shaw earned $445,285 as the runner-up. The 2019 WSOP $5,000 no-limit hold’em event winner grew his lifetime earnings to nearly $3.7 million with this strong showing.
