Event no. 7, the $1,000 buy-in no-limit hold’em event at the 2013 World Series of Poker, featured one of the more stacked final tables you’ll see during the summer.
In the end, after a 187-hand heads-up battle, 28-year-old Floridian poker pro Matt Waxman emerged victorious, earning his first career gold bracelet at his fourth final-table appearance.
Waxman topped a field of 1,837 players who created a total prize pool of $1,653,300. After besting a final table that included notables such as runner-up Eric Baldwin, Amit Makhija, Brent Hanks and Jason Koon, Waxman was awarded the $305,952 first-place prize.
Waxman was asked about his epic heads-up battle with Baldwin, a former bracelet winner.
“It definitely makes the bracelet that much sweeter,” Waxman explained. “I played for several hours heads up and also beat a former Card Player Player of the Year, so, you know he knows what he’s doing. He played very, very well post flop today. So that made me put a lot more in preflop. I didn’t think I could get an edge on him after the flop. When you are playing against the best players, you have to find your value in the other spots.”
Waxman, who won the WPT Grand Prix de Paris in 2011, now has over $2.5 million in career live tournament earnings.
