When asked what he planned to do with his recent windfall the young poker pro joked, “Not hookers and blow. That’s not my style. Seriously, I’m probably just going to put it in the bank.”
In addition to the title and the money Hagerling also earned 1,260 Card Player Player of the Year points, climbing to 67th place in the overall standings. He defeated 2012 gold bracelet winner Max Steinberg heads-up for the title.
The hand of the match came when Hagerling raised to 65,000 on the button and Steinberg three-bet to 175,000. hagerling called and the flop brought the K73. Steinberg bet 215,000 and Hagerling called. The 5 hit the turn and Steinberg now checked. Hagerling fired 525,000 only to have Steinberg check-raise all-in for 2.2 million.
After two minutes in the tank, Hagerling made the call with the K10 only to find he was in bad shape against Steinberg’s AK. Steinberg just barely had Hagerling covered, and just had to avoid one of the three remaining tens in the deck and the title was his.
The 10 peeled off the deck on the river, however, crippling Steinberg and all but securing the title for Hagerling. For his runner-up finish Steinberg earned $231,501 and 1,050 POY points.
