Revel Hotel CasinoNew Jersey currently has 12 operating casinos that bring in a total gaming tax revenue of about $254.84 million annually. Atlantic City’s newest luxury hotel and casino, Revel, recently announced its first profitable month since it opened in April of 2012.

It has been a constant struggle for the $2.4 billion destination resort since the grand opening. Earlier this year the casino filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Aside from the legal help, the turnaround is assumed to be from a new marketing plan that launched last month. Any gamblers who signed up for the casino’s players’ club card was promised a refund for all slot-machine losses during July. In addition, the casino also lifted their much maligned smoking ban.

Despite the welcomed good news the casino-hotel laid off 75 workers on Monday. The layoffs came from multiple departments and even included a senior vice president according to Chief Executive Officer Jeff Hartmann.

Hartmann explained that the revenue projections could no longer support those employees that were laid off. The 75 employees represented about two percent of Revel’s workers.

The CEO added that the promotion efforts have worked so far. Although Hartmann would not disclose specific numbers he did warn that casino profit projections were made before the players were refunded their losses from the slot promotion.
