John Eames had never played in a World Series of Poker Circuit tournament before, but it seems that the first time was a charm for the man from Southport, England. In his premiere Eames topped a field of 1,044 entries in the 2014 WSOP Circuit Planet Hollywood $1,675 no-limit hold’em main event to win his first gold ring and the $289,706 first-place prize.
Eames was very nearly the first player eliminated at the final table of this event, getting all in with the 109 against the A5 of Matt Berkey and the JJ of Michael Skomac. Eames was able to come from behind, making a straight on the river to triple up.
From there Eames was able to navigate his way to heads-up play with Berkey, who had held the chip lead in this event at the end of day 1 and day 2. They final showdown began with Eames holding a slight chip advantage, but over the two hour showdown there were many ups and downs. The penultimate hand was a coin flip for roughly 75 percent of the chips in play. Eames won, and on the next hand picked up pocket queens to seal the deal.
Berkey was sent to the rail in second place with $179,119 in prize money and 800 Card Player Player of the Year points. Eames scored 960 POY points at his second final table of 2014, moving him into 288th place in the overall POY standings.
