Melbourne local Manny Stavropoulos has emerged victorious in the 2015 APPT Aussie Millions $10,600 AUD no-limit hold’em main event, topping a field of 648 entries to win the biggest poker tournament title in the Southern Hemisphere right in his own back yard.
For the win the Australian earned his first major title and the $1,385,500 AUD first-place prize. In addition to the money and the glory Stavropoulos also scored 2,100 Card Player Player of the Year points, enough to instantly move him into second place in the overall POY race standings.
It was hardly an easy road to victory for Stavropoulos. Seven players had returned for the final day, with Stavropoulos in fifth chip position. Joining him at the final table were notable poker pros Brian Rast, Richard Lyndaker and Australia’s Grant Levy.
In the end it came down to a final head-ups showdown between Stavropoulos and Germany’s Lennart Uphoff. Stavropoulos began the one-on-one battle with roughly half as many chips as his 20-year-old opponent but was able to quickly claw his way into the lead. By the time the final hand arose Uphoff was at a nearly 4-to-1 disadvantage. He limped in from the button and Stavropoulos checked. The flop brought the A98 and Stavropoulos checked. Uphoff bet 250,000 and Stavropoulos made the call, prompting the dealer to roll over the 7 on the turn. Stavropoulos then bet 650,000 and Uphoff made the call. After the 8 hit the river Stavropoulos slid out 850,000 only to have Uphoff move all in for roughly 2.8 million total. Stavropoulos made the call with the J10. Uphoff had also made a straight, but his 106 was the second best. With that he was sent to the rail as the runner up while Stavropoulos secured the pot and the title.
