John Gale won his first bracelet at the 2006 World Series of Poker. Nine years later the 61-year-old Englishman won his second WSOP title, topping a field of 1,791 players in the $1,000 no-limit hold’em turbo event to earn his second bracelet and the first-place prize of $298,290.
“It is still incredible,” said Gale after the win. “I cannot believe it, I am over the moon.”
In addition to the hardware and the money Gale also earned 1,080 Card Player Player of the Year points, enough to move him into a three-way tie for 87th place in the overall standings.
Being a turbo event, the accelerated structure meant that it took only two days to play down from the gigantic starting field to a champion. Gale came into the final day in second chip position with 29 players remaining. He survived to the final table in third chip position, and busted the fifth, fourth and third place finishers to take a gigantic 8-to-1 chip lead into heads-up play with Gary Luther.
The final showdown only lasted 15 hands. On the last hand of the tournament Gale raised to 330,000 on the button and Luther moved all-in. Gale made the call with 22 and was racing against Luther’s A3.
The board ran out 844109 to secure the pot and the title for Gale. Luther was eliminated in second place, earning $184,481 for his runner-up showing. Luther earned 900 Player of the Year points. Earlier this year he finished seventh in the Card Player Poker Tour Choctaw $1,080 no-limit hold’em main event, and as a result of these two score has climbed to 83rd place in the POY rankings.
