Poker pro Dan Smith raised a whopping $1.7 million for charity, all through online social media efforts. Smith himself matched $175,000 in donations.
In a blog post, Smith called the response “overwhelming.” A total of 134 people, which included many from the poker community, participated in the year-end charity drive, which raised money for groups such as the Against Malaria Fund, Give Directly and the Massachusetts Bail Fund.
Smith said that daily fantasy sports player Tom Crowley, known by the screen name “ChipotleAddict,” donated a hefty $500,000 after the drive surpassed seven figures. That was after his brother Martin Crowley, also a DFS star, had donated $525,000 to match what had been raised.
“The limited details I know of their story are amazing: two guys who plan on making a huge difference in the world by doing the thing they are the best at: fantasy sports,” Smith said of the Crowley brothers. “I can’t say enough great things about these two guys who really epitomize the effective altruism movement.”
