The 2017 World Series of Poker $565 pot-limit Omaha event drew a massive field of 3,186 entries, setting the record for the largest ever live PLO tournament. This event is similar to the popular $565 no-limit hold’em Colossus event that was introduced three years ago, which has led to players lovingly referring to it as the ‘PLOssus’. In the end the last player standing was Tyler Smith. For the win the 30-year-old from Smithdale, Mississippi earned his first WSOP gold bracelet and the top prize of $244,344.
Smith came into the final table as the second shortest stack, but was able to find a huge double up early in the final table when got all-in with the AKK3 up against Jessie Bryant’s AAQ10 and was able to flop a set of kings. The final board ran out K988J to give Smith a full house and the massive double up. He then managed to knock out Marek Ohnisko in fifth place ($56,607), 2014 WSOP Asia-Pacific main event champion Scott Davies in fourth place ($75,699) and Igor Sharaskin in third place ($102,045) to set up a heads-up showdown with Jason Stockfish.
The final battle only lasted a single hand. Smith raised to 600,000 from the button with blinds at 100,000-200,000 and Stockfish moved all-in. Smith made the call with the AQ87. Stockfish had the A1085. The board ran out J64J2 and Smith’s ace-queen played to secure the pot and the title. Stockfish earned $138,655 for his runner-up showing.
