Day 25 of the 38th World Series of Poker saw day two of the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. world championship and it proved a day of mixed fortunes for the European challengers.
Patrik Antonius, the only European to cash in last year's H.O.R.S.E event, Carlos Mortensen, Patrick Bueno, Marco Traniello, Alex Kravchenko, and John Duthie were eliminated.
Going into day three, European hopes were hanging on Bruno Fitoussi, Max Pescatori, Rob Hollink, and Thor Hansen, with 52 players left in the event.
The $1,500 no-limit hold'em game saw Chris Bjorin from Sweden and Nick Goodall from the UK compete for the bracelet. Goodall made a hasty exit, though, going out in eighth place for a $51,192 payday.
Bjorin, who has two bracelets already, fared somewhat better but this year's bracelet remains elusive - he finished sixth for $87,215. The event was won by Robert Cheung, who took down $673,628.
Event 40, the $1,500 mixed hold'em (limit/no-limit), entered day two with Jeff Lisandro, Fabrice Soulier, Peter Gould, Peter Dalhuijsen, and Sylvester Geoghegan in contention.
Despite trading the chip lead for much of the day, Lisandro and Gould went furthest, but fell short of returning for the final table.
The $1,500 pot-limit Omaha eight-or-better witnessed a 687-strong field with a colourful array of European hopefuls, including Rolf Slotboom, Donnacha O'Dea, Peter Dalhuijsen, Marcus Golser, Marcel Luske, Pascal Perrault, David Benyamine, Andreas Krause, Surindar Sunar, Julian Gardiner, Michael Gracz, Dave 'Devilfish' Ulliott, Dave Colclough, Barny Boatman, Ross Boatman, Alan Smurfit, Michael Keiner, and Chris Bjorin.
At the end of play, Dalhuijsen, Luske, Ulliott, and Sunar were among the 98 players remaining.
The $1,000 world championship seniors tournament had Mickey Wernick, Padraig Parkinson, and Alan Smurfit among the 1,882 participants.
Parkinson and Smurfit were gone by the second break and Wernick limped his short stack into day two and the money.
Tuesday 26 June sees day three of the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E world championship, day two of the $1,000 world championship seniors event, day two of the $1,500 pot-limit Omaha eight-or-better tournament, the final table of the $1,500 mixed hold'em (limit/no-limit) game, and the start of the $2,000 limit hold'em tournament.
