For the eighth month in a row, casino gaming revenue in New Jersey increased.
According to the state’s Division of Gaming Enforcement, the nine Atlantic City Casinos generated $229.6 million in revenue in January.
The DGE figures show that January numbers are up 24.6 percent year over year when the state took in $184.3 million. In 2018, however, there were only seven casinos in the state and sports betting was not yet legal.
Online gambling is what made all the difference in the new year. The market saw a 53 percent increase year over year.
Golden Nugget has been the revenue leader for online gambling in the Garden State since online gambling was legalized in 2016 and generated just shy of $12.2 million in January, more than a third of the state’s $33.6 million in revenue. Back in January 2018, online gaming resulted in revenue of just $22 million.
The state also had a record month for sports betting handle with $319 million in wagers accepted by the state’s books. It resulted in the third-best month for sports betting revenue with $9.75 million.
The most revenue from a brick-and-mortar location was the $1.27 million that Ocean Resort Casino generated, while DraftKings topped the list of online sportsbooks with $6.9 million in revenue. Online sports betting made up about 80 percent of the state’s total handle, with the internet sportsbooks taking about $305 million in wagers.
The state of New Jersey collected $19.9 million in taxes from its state’s gambling operators in January.
