The world’s largest poker site was hit with the largest fine in the history of the state of New Jersey on Monday.

PokerStars, which runs BetStars sportsbook in New Jersey, was fined $10,000 by the New Jersey Department of Gaming Enforcement for taking more than 200 wagers on prohibited sporting events.

According to the Press of Atlantic City, the company accepted 216 wagers last November for a total of $2,756.89 on a Rutgers University men’s basketball game against Eastern Michigan University. They also took several more bets on a Monmouth University men’s basketball game against the University of Pennsylvania.

Under current New Jersey law, it is illegal to place bets on collegiate sporting events that involve colleges from the Garden State. According to the Stars Group, it was just a technological mishap.

“We generally don’t comment on regulatory matters like these, but we had a manual gating error from our international games into New Jersey,” senior vice president for Strategy & Operations, USA at the Stars Group Matt Primeaux told the Press of Atlantic City in an email. “We cooperated with the DGE as we always do, have learnt from the problem, and are confident it won’t reoccur.”

Sen. Ray Lesniak, the sponsor of the legislation that originally made sports betting legal in New Jersey, doesn’t believe the prohibition of betting on New Jersey universities are necessary.

“If it’s not going to affect the integrity of the pros, it’s not going to affect the college kids,” he said.

Before Monday, the biggest fine in the history of the NJDGE was $2,000.
