Toby Joyce has won the 2020 World Series of Poker Online $800 pot-limit Omaha event, defeating a field of 1,281 total entries to earn his first WSOP gold bracelet and the top prize of $139,453. This was the Irish poker player’s first major tournament win, but not his largest score. Back in December of 2019 Joyce finished as the runner-up in the World Poker Tour Five Diamond Poker Classic $10,400 buy-in main event to earn $1,120,040.
The strong turnout for this event resulted in the $973,560 prize pool being distributed among the top 188 finishers, with a min-cash being worth $1,694. By the time the final table was set, American poker pro Mark Herm held the chip lead, while Joyce began the final table in fifth chip position.
The first player to be eliminated at the final table was Wilder Brito. The Brazilian got all-in preflop with pockets kings and was called by Nazarenko’s AKJ9. The flop gave Nazarenko aces and nines and he held from there. Brito earned $11,650 as the ninth-place finisher.
Next to hit the rail was Rahul Gupta. He got all-in with pocket kings and top pair on a 952 flop up against the QQ63 of Herm, The turn brought the Q to give Herm top set and the river was a blank. With that Gupta was knocked out in eighth place ($16,054).
Seven-handed play continued for a while before the next bustout took place. Grzegorz Derkowski ultimately got all-in with AAKQ against the KK22 of Maksim Fomin. The 10824J runout gave Fomin a set of deuces to lock up the pot. Derkowski was awarded $22,122 for his seventh-place showing.
Fomin earned his second straight knockout by once again beating out pocket aces. Giorgiy Skhulukhiya was all-in with AAK5, while Fomin held KKQ6. The flop gave Fomin queens and sixes and Skhulukhiya was unable to improve. He earned $30,483 as the sixth-place finisher.
Fomin was not yet finished, though. This time around he had AK73 and was facing the AKJ4. Fomin’s live cards fared better, as he ultimately won with a pair of sevens that beat out the pair of four’s made by Nazarenko. The Ukrainian took home $42,005 for his deep run in this event.
Jonas Kronwitter got all-in with pocket kings and found himself up against the pocket aces of Herm. Both players ended up playing their overpairs by the river, and Herm’s aces were enough to take down the pot and eliminate Kronwitter in fourth place ($57,883).
Joyce found a couple key doubles during three-handed action that resulted in him getting within striking distance of the top spot on the leaderboard. He managed to move into the outright lead by winning the next major showdown. With a flop of K96, Joyce checked and Fomin fired out a continuation bet from the button after having raised preflop. Joyce check-raised to 5,344,000 and Fomin called all-in for less with the K1076 for top and bottom pair with a gutshot and backdoor flush outs. Hoyce held AJ95 for middle pair and the nut flush draw. The 7 on the turn kep Fomin ahead for the moment, but the 9 on the river gave Joyce trips. Fomin had to settle for $79,761 as the third-place finisher.
With that Joyce entered heads-up play with 17.9 million to Mark Herm’s 14.2 million. Herm managed to seize the lead early on in the battle, but Joyce regained the upper hand and then extended his lead to more than a 2:1 advantage by the time the final hand was dealt. Joyce raised to 2,400,000 from the button with the AQJ10 and Herm re-raised to 7,200,000. Joyce moved all-in and Herm called to put himself at risk with the AK88. The board came down QJ5Q2 and Joyce made queens full of jacks to secure the pot and the title. Herm earned $109,909 as the runner-up finisher.
