Michael Liang has won the 2021 LA Poker Classic $10,000 buy-in main event, defeating a field of 69 entries to capture the title and the top prize of $175,300. This was the second-largest score of Liang’s career, behind only his $182,920 victory in a WSOP Circuit Horseshoe Baltimore $365 buy-in gold ring event. Liang now has $495,751 in career tournament earnings.
The 69-entry field for this event was way down from the 490 players that bought in back in 2020. The whole series was markedly pared down for 2021, with just eight events, compared with the 68 tournaments that were part of the 2020 LAPC schedule. This year’s tournament was the first LAPC main event that was not run in conjunction with the World Poker Tour since Gus Hansen won the championship back in 2003.
While this year’s main event has now decided a champion, the 2020 final table has not yet played out. It was one of three WPT delayed final tables that was put on indefinite hiatus throughout 2020 as a result of the live poker shutdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The re-scheduled dates for these long-delayed final tables were only recently announced, with the 2020 LAPC final table set for May 17, 2021.
Liang overcame a tough final table on the road to the title, outlasting the likes of experienced tournament professional Peter Neff (8th – $23,500), WPT champion Alex Foxen (7th – $28,080), HPT Colorado and WPTDeepStacks Thunder valley champion Alexander Greenblatt (6th – $35,270), and runner-up Adam Hendrix, who was fresh off of a ninth-place finish in the 2021 Wynn Spring Classic $3,500 championship event held just days earlier.
Hendrix and Liang struck a deal heads-up that redistributed the remaining prize pool. Liang secured the title and the top payout of $175,300, while Hendrix earned $170,080 for his latest deep run.
Here is a look at the payouts awarded at the final table:
