Andrew Lichtenberger Wins His Second Venetian High Roller Poker Title In Four-Day Span

The Venetian DeepStack Showdown III series featured four consecutive days of high-stakes tournament action from Aug. 12 – 15. Andrew Lichtenberger bookended the high roller slate, winning the kickoff $10,000 buy-in event on Aug. 12 for $120,000 and then the closing $25,000 buy-in event on Aug. 15 for another $125,350. These two victories in a four-day span saw the 33-year-old poker pro increase his career tournament earnings to more than $11.7 million.

Lichtenberger was also awarded 168 Card Player Player of the Year points for his most recent victory, having earned 105 points for his title run just days earlier. With these two titles and four additional POY final-table finishes in 2021, Lichtenberger now sits in 61st place in this year’s POY race standings, sponsored by Global Poker. Lichtenberger has accumulated 1,393 total points, with POY earnings of $604,100 so far this year. He also earned 75 PokerGO Tour points, enough to see him climb into 22nd place on that leaderboard.

The 14-entry turnout for this final high roller event at The Venetian Resort Las Vegas built a prize pool of $350,000. Only the top two players were initially slated to make the money. Chris Brewer hit the rail in fourth place when his A6 lost to the JJ of Cary Katz. The flop came down KJ5, giving Katz middle set and Brewer the nut flush draw. The 7 on the turn left Brewer in need of a diamond on the river to stay alive. The 9 was no help and Brewer was eliminated in fourth place.

The final three players negotiated a deal that distributed the prize pool among them based on ICM numbers. Lichtenberger was awarded the title and the top payout as part of the agreement, and play concluded for the event. Cary Katz earned $121,130 and 140 POY points for his 15th POY-qualified final table showing of the year. He moved into 12th place in the rankings as a result.

Katz also locked up 73 PokerGO Tour points as the runner-up, enough to see him take over fifth place in that points race.
