Julien Martini Wins Second Career Bracelet In World Series of Poker Europe Sort Deck Event

Julien Martini earned his first World Series of Poker gold bracelet in 2018 as the champion of the $1,500 Omaha eight-or-better event. The French poker pro only had to wait three years to add his second piece of WSOP hardware. The 29-year-old defeated a field of 98 entries to win the 2021 WSOP Europe €2,500 short deck event, overcoming Philipp Schwab heads-up to secure the title, the bracelet, and the top prize of €60,009 ($67,210 USD).

Martini increased his lifetime live tournament earnings to just shy of $5 million with this win. The biggest score of his career came when he finished second in the 2019 PokerStars Players Championship, which set the record as the largest $25,000 buy-in poker tournament ever with 1,039 entries. Martini was awarded $2,974,000 as the runner-up.

This latest victory saw the Frenchman take home 324 Card Player Player of the Year points. This was his second title of the year, having taken down a €500 buy-in no-limit hold’em event at the All Poker Open in July for $35,867 USD and 300 points. With three POY-qualified final table finishes and 844 total points, Martini now sits inside the top 400 in the 2021 POY race standings, which are sponsored by Global Poker.

This tournament lasted only two days. The field of 98 entries was narrowed down to 20 contenders after the first day of action, with Martini sitting in fourth chip position when action resumed for day 2. He survived to the final table as the shortest stack, but began his rebuild by doubling up in the early going. He continued to climb thanks to his knockout of Nicolas Bokowski (7th -$8,928), which saw Martini make the broadway straight with A-K to secure the pot.

Christian Stratmeyer ran J-10 into the pocket jacks of Philipp Schwab to finish sixth ($11,647 USD). Martini earned his second knockout of the final table when his Q-10 beat out the 8-7 suited of Brian Cornell (5th – $15,521 USD).

Martini proceeded to score two more eliminations, busting Reto Herrmann (4th – $21,119) and recent WSOPE bracelet winner Emil Bise (3rd – $29,324 USD) to take a 2:1 chip lead into heads-up play with Schwab. He was able to extend that advantage event further before the final hand was dealt.

Martini raised to 100,000 with AK and Schwab three-bet shoved for 1.1 million with KJ. The board ran out Q66QK to lock up the pot and the title for Martini. Schwab took home $41,537 as the runner-up finisher.
