Thomas Boivin outlasted a 105-entry field in the 2023 Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown $25,000 buy-in no-limit hold’em high roller, topping a tough final table to secure the title and the top prize of $711,300.
This was the largest live tournament payday yet for the Belgian poker pro, surpassing the $428,000 he earned as the winner of the 2018 European Poker Tour Prague €25,000 event. With this victory, he increased his career earnings to more than $5.5 million.
With three final-table finishes, one title, and more than $800,000 in to-date earnings, Boivin has climbed into 74th place in the 2023 Card Player Player of the Year standings presented by Global Poker.
Boivin was not the only player to make big moves on the POY leaderboard as a result of this event. Third-place finisher Ren Lin earned $319,000 and 560 POY points for his 12th final-table finish of the year. With two titles and nearly $2.5 million in cashes so far in 2023, Lin is now sitting in second place in the rankings behind only Nacho Barbero. Lin’s 4,869 total points trail Barbero’s 5,235 by just 366 points.
The strong turnout for this tournament saw the $1,000,000 guarantee easily surpassed, with $2,593,500 in prize money ultimately paid out among the top 15 finishers. Plenty of big names ran deep, including three-time bracelet winner Kristen Foxen (15th), bracelet winner and World Poker Tour champion Alex Foxen (14th), three-time bracelet winner and 2015 WSOP main event champion Joe McKeehen (11th), WPT champion Jonathan Jaffe (10th), poker’s second-highest earning tournament player Bryn Kenney (7th), bracelet winner Joseph Cheong (6th), and two-time bracelet winner Martin Zamani (5th).
Frank Lagodich earned a career-best payday of $505,200 as the runner-up finisher, joining the top 100 in the POY race after recording what was his fifth POY-qualified score of 2023.
