Several high-stakes side events have wrapped up over the past few days at the 2023 European Poker Tour Monte Carlo series, with each awarding sizable six-figure paydays to the eventual champions.
On May 1, Stephen Chidick emerged victorious in the €50,000 buy-in no-limit hold’em event. The British poker pro defeated a field of 17 entries to secure the title and $240,408 in prize money after striking a three-handed deal. The 34-year-old now has more than $47.8 million in recorded tournament earnings, good for fourth place on poker’s all-time money list.
This was Chidwick’s third title and sixth final-table finish of the year. With 2,270 Card Player Player of the Year points and more than $2.6 million in to-date POY earnings, Chidwick now sits in 20th place in the 2023 POY standings presented by Global Poker.
Isaac Haxton took home $262,139 as the runner-up finisher, while Seth Davies earned $273,974 as part of the deal before going on to finish third.
The very next day saw a €25,000 buy-in no-limit tournament held. A total of 38 entries were made in the high roller event, creating a prize pool worth $976,247 that was paid out among the top six finishers.
When the dust settled, the last player standing was two-time bracelet winner Joao Vieira. The Portuguese poker pro earned $336,868 for the win after defeating France’s Jean-Noel Thorel heads-up for the title.
This was Vieira’s second title and third final-table finish of the year, but he was not yet finished adding to his totals in Monaco. The day after his win, Vieira managed to navigate his way through a field of 40 entries to the business end of another €25,000 buy-in high roller, this time finishing third for $159,270.
Vieira’s elimination left Isaac Haxton and Seth Davies vying for the title. The pair ended up striking a deal, and Haxton ultimately secured the title and $288,545 in prize money. This was his fifth title and 12th final-table finish of 2023. With 4,342 points, Haxton has climbed into third place on the POY leaderboard. He is tied with second-ranked Ren Lin for the most final-table finishes, and his $5.6 million in to-date POY earnings leads all contenders this year. His nearest competitor in that category is Same Greenwood with $3.8 million.
Haxton’s two big scores in Monte Carlo increased his career earnings to $37.5 million, placing him 12th on the all-time earnings list.
Davies took home $297,173 as the runner-up. The World Poker Tour champion now has $21.1 million in recorded scores to his name over his career. With 3,269 points accrued across 11 final tables in 2023, he has laid claim to the sixth-place spot in the POY standings. He has already cashed for more than $3 million this year.
