Leo Kam, a 26-year-old chef at Nobu, one of London's most exclusive restaurants, won the ninth leg of the Grosvenor UK Poker Tour (GUKPT) in London's Grosvenor Victoria casino this weekend, beating 432 other participants.
Kam, a Canadian who previously worked for renowned Michelin-starred chef Gordon Ramsey, won his £1,000 entry fee in a £50 satellite and is more accustomed to playing £20 games.
After six days at the felt, Kam emerged victorious, beating scrap-yard merchant Robert Boon heads up to become the first overseas player to lift a GUKPT title. Other non-nationals at the final table included American Carl Buskirk, who finished fourth, and former Pokerroom CEO Patrik Selin, from Sweden, who finished eighth.
Kam had taken time off of work to play in the event and now plans to take another break to play in the £3,000 GUKPT grand final later in the year.
