WSOP -- Angel Guillen Wins Event No. 32Takes Home First Bracelet and $530,548 |
|
Prior to 2009, the name Angel Guillen was relatively unknown. However, that has all changed, as Guillen took down event No. 32 ($2,000 No Limit Hold’em) of the World Series Of Poker, winning his first bracelet and $530,548 to go with it. Guillen also took home $312,800 for finishing second to Keven Stammen in event No. 13 ($2,500 No Limit Hold’em) earlier in the WSOP.
Guillen did not take up playing serious poker until this year, and he has done well. His first cash came at the PokerStars Carribbean Adventure, and he cashed again at the EPT Grand Final. But those cashes pale in comparison to the $843,348 that Guillen has pocketed at the 2009 WSOP alone.
The tournament started with 1,534 entrants, each jockeying for that elusive bracelet. Those who did manage to cash included Theo Tran, Jon Turner, Noah Schwartz, Chau Giang, and Michael Binger.
Guillen fought his way through this massive field filled with talent and entered the final table as the second-shortest stack. It was an uphill climb for Guillen, but he eventually got to go heads-up against Mika Paasonen down by only 600,000 in chips. With friend J.C. Alvarado cheering him on, Guillen took the chip lead and expanded it to an almost 3-1 advantage.
Paasonen would not go quietly, however, as he managed to put a couple of bad beats on the chip leader to get back into contention. But Guillen would not be fazed, as he kept the pressure on and eventually had Paasonen all in and drawing slim against Guillen’s set of threes. The board missed Paasonen and Guillen took home his first bracelet.
Here are the official final table results:
