WSOP -- Carsten Joh Wins Event No. 51German Native Makes First North American Score |
|
Carsten Joh has accumulated over $300,000 in tournament earnings in Europe, but during the early hours of Tuesday morning, the German native made his presence felt on this side of the Atlantic.
Joh earned his first World Series of Poker gold bracelet by winning event No. 51, a $1,500 no-limit hold’em event. He waded his way through a massive field of 2,781 players and took home $664,426 for his efforts.
The turning point for Joh’s tournament came five-handed. Joh was the short-stack and was all in with A J, up against Steven Levy’s A K. He ended up making runner-runner flush to take the pot and gain some momentum.
Joh was short most of the day. He entered the final table seventh in chips, and after his crucial hand with Levy, he was able to last long enough to make three-handed play.
At the start of three-handed play, he was the short-stack by a fair amount. With Walasinski having more than 4 million in chips and Andrew Chen having over 6 million in chips, Joh only had just under 2 million in his stack. After seemingly systematically taking everything from David Walasinski and eliminating him in third place, he took a small chip lead against Andrew Chen heading into heads-up play.
Over the course the hour-long heads-up match, Joh slowly extended his lead. He grew his chip lead to a massive 5-1 chip advantage. After he grew his chip lead to that amount, he won a coin-flip with pocket sixes against Chen’s 10 9 to take down his first bracelet and make his name known in North America.
Here are the final table results.
1. Carsten Joh – $664,426
2. Andrew Chen – $412,632
3. David Walasinski – $272,405

Thibaut Durand moved all in preflop with J 7 and was up against Steven Levy who held Q 7.

Owen Crowe Eliminated in Fifth Place ($145,199)
Andrew Chen raised from the button, and Owen Crowe three-bet from the small blind. After Carsten Joh folded in the big blind, Andrew Chen moved all in.
After several minutes in the tank, Crowe said, “I’m probably going to hate myself,” before calling.
Crowe showed the A10 and was up against the 88 of Chen. The board ran out Q 7 3 7 4, meaning that Chen’s pair held up, and Crowe was sent home in fifth place.
Steven Levy Eliminated in Fourth Place ($192,650)
Steven Levy had just lost a race to David Walasinski to double him up a few hands before this hand came up.
Steven Levy raised to 220,000 in the small blind, and David Walasinski moved all in from the big blind. Levy called, and both hands were turned up.
Levy held the A 9, which was way behind the A J of Walasinski. The board fell Q 10 6 8 6, which eliminated Levy from the tournament.
David Walasinski Eliminated in Third Place ($272,405)
Several hands after doubling up Casten Joh, David Walasinski moved all in from the button for 1,620,000 and was called by Carsten Joh from the big blind.
Joh tables K 10 and is way ahead of the K 7 that Walasinski exposed. The board ran out J 10 6 9 7, and that eliminated Walasinski in third place and allows for the start of heads-up play.
