Danny Chevalier took down the PokerStars.net Australia New Zealand Poker Tour (ANZPT) Queenstown after beating 133 other players for the top end of a prize pool of more than NZD$300,000.
Spotted among those who turned up for the event were Joe Hachem, Aussie Million 2009 champ Stewart Scott, ANZPT Melbourne winner Chris Levick, and 2009 NZ Poker Champs main event winner Soren Eriksen.
The Tour’s chief Danny McDonagh drew up a schedule which ensured the event included four starting days to give players the chance to get to see some of the spectacular sights nearby. In the end it was 21-year-old PokerStars qualifier Andrew Hinrichsen heads up versus 46-year-old local Danny Chevalier, with NZD$87,435 to play for.
After 30 minutes, the ultimate hand came when Chevalier called Hinrichsen’s all-in holding A 7 on a flop of Q 5 4. Hinrichsen held top pair with Q 10 but it was no use as the turn and the river came the 8 and the A.
Chevalier said, “I want to thank everyone involved in this wonderful tournament. While I lived here this casino was like a second home so being able to win this amongst good friends makes it very special indeed.”
The top payouts for the event were:
1st Danny Chevalier (Australia) — NZD $87,435
2nd Andrew Hinrichsen (Australia) — NZD $57,285
3rd Glenn Maiden (New Zealand) — NZD $33,165
