Bary Shulman Wins 1,920 POY Points at World Series of Poker Europe — Daniel Negreanu and Jason Mercier Join the POY Top 10

Barry and Allyn Jaffrey ShulmanThe World Series of Poker Europe main-event final table awarded the most Card Player Player of the Year points this past week, with 1,920 of them going to the winner, Card Player publisher Barry Shulman (pictured left). That gives Shulman 2,535 total points for the year, which puts him in 26th place in the current standings. Shulman picked up the other chunk of his points when he finished in fifth place at the final table of event No. 14 ($2,500 six-handed no-limit hold’em) at the 2009 WSOP, good enough for 555 points.

Daniel Negreanu finished runner-up to Shulman in London, which was good for 1,650 points. Negreanu made the largest leap on the leader boards with the finish, moving into sixth position with 3,342 points total. He accumulated 1,692 points this summer at the WSOP, where he cashed three times and made two final tables in Las Vegas. He won the POY award in 2004, and he would become the fourth repeat winner if he wins in 2009, joining Men “The Master” Ngyuen, T.J. Cloutier, and David “The Dragon” Pham in the exclusive club.

Jason Mercier continued his strong 2009 and used a fourth-place finish at the WSOP Europe main event to jump into eighth position on the leader board. He was awarded 990 points in London, which grew his total to 3,171. It was the seventh time in 2009 that Mercier scored POY points; his largest single score before this week came when he won event No. 5 ($1,500 pot-limit Omaha) at the WSOP and took home 960 points.

All of these players are still chasing the one man at the top, Yevgeniy Timoshenko, who added a little (50 points) to his POY lead with a 25th-place finish at WSOP Europe.
