Eric Woerth is set to liberalise the online poker market in FranceThe debate on how France will regulate and license the €5 billion gaming industry got underway yesterday in the French parliament with the online poker industry watching eagerly from the sidelines.

Up to 3 million French people are estimated to use gambling websites from outside the jurisdiction according to Reuters and budget minister Eric Woerth said, “We have chosen a middle way which I think is just and efficient, a controlled opening up of the market. I want to put an end to these parallel universes. I want to put an end to the jungle of illegal sites.”

Currently all gambling in France is controlled by state agencies Francaise des Jeux and PMU but the new law will see private companies regulated and licensed.

Online poker operators such as Chilipoker are already positioning themselves to enter the market when it opens up next year.
