Big Hands:
Walpert Hanging By The Proverbial Thread
After Don Mullis limped in from late position, Leo Walpert moved all in for his last 17,200 from the big blind, and Mullis made the call. "It's time to gamble," said Mullis, showing J 9 . Walpert had A 2 , and they were indeed racing. The flop was favorable to Walpert, 8 5 5 , and the turn card, the A , was, as Jimmy Fricke, seated next to Walpert, noted, "interesting," as it took away Wallis' jack or nine outs but gave him eight hearts that could make his hand. The 5 on the river, however, made Walpert a boat and doubled him up to about 40,000.
Vehedi Mucks For Half His Chips
Vehedi fired 16,000 on a board of K J 2 7 and Tony Dunst, who had smooth-called the flop, immediately moved all in. Vehedi had about 27,000 behind and deliberated for several minutes before he made his decision. "You seem so confident," he said, finally, and folded his hand. Dunst is now one of the chip leaders, with about 170,000 in chips.
Patterson Eliminated
Stuart Patterson took a hit when his J J ran up against Carter King's K K and the board stayed low. He was eliminated a short while later.
Players are now on a twenty minute break.

Big Hands:
SCTrojans catches five-outter to stay alive
Scott Freeman reraised preflop but was unable to get the original raise to fold. After a Q 8 2 flop, Freeman's opponent bet out. Freeman then pushed all in, a raise of 25,800. His opponent eventually called with Q J , well ahead of Freeman's T 8 . But the turn was the T , giving Freeman two pair, and the river was the 5 . After the hand Freeman had roughly 80,000 chips to put him close to the chip lead.
Vahedi crippled with big slick
Joe Davis raised to 3,600 from early position and then called Amir Vahedi's late-position reraise to 10,600. The flop was 5 9 5 and David, acting first, moved all in for over 25,000. Vahedi immediately called time and after about five minutes Davis called the clock. As the tournament director began to count down from 10 (at the zero Vahedi's head would be dead) Vahedi called. Davis flipped over two black sixes, while Vahedi showed A-K. The turn and river were were 8 and 3 , and Vahedi was left with just 7,000 chips. Shortly later he was eliminated.
Tran makes 'fun' call to chop pot
With the board showing Q 3 Q 9 9 , a player in the small blind bet 5,200. Theo Tran said out loud, "this will be a fun call," and then tossed his chips into the pot. His opponent told him an ace is good, to which Tran replied that he didn't have an ace. Then his opponent flipped over K 8 , and Tran showed K J . As the dealer split up the pot Tran grabbed the 9 and turned it over.

Eliminations:
Jamie Gold
Big Hands:
Vahedi wins pot, gets angry
With the board showing 8 6 9 K J , Amir Vahedi bet 15,000. His opponent thought for a few minutes before calling. Vahedi said he had "jacks up," and asked if he had that beat. Vahedi's opponent said nothing and waited for Vahedi to flip his cards over. This seemed to upset Vahedi, who said he wanted to see his opponent's cards as he flipped over J 9 . The dealer looked at Vahedi as if to say "Really?" and then showd that his opponent held K 3 .
Gold runs out of luck
After doubling up in the last level, Jamie Gold was once against short-stacked and called off his remaining chips with A-Q. However his opponent held A-K and had Gold dominated. Gold didn't catch a queen and was eliminated from the tournament.
Courtney folds on turn
From the small blind, Courtney Harrington raised the player under the gun and he called. The flop was 3 2 9 and Harrington bet 3,600. His opponent caled and the turn was the 5 . This time Harrington checked and folded to his opponent's bet of 3,600.
Theo Tran doing well again
Theo Tran already has two fouth-place finishes in this year's World Series, and is doing well in today's tournament. He is playing aggressively and catching cards. He induced a bluff on the river when he had Q-J to make a queen-high straight one hand, and won a pot for over 12,000 chips on the turn against two opponents. Currently Tran has over 70,000 chips, putting him among the chip leaders.

Blinds/Antes: 50-75 with 75-150 limits
Entrants: Approx. 879
Average Stack: 3,066
Eliminations: Kenna James
Big Hands:
Bellande Getting Started Right
Jean-Robert Bellande made it 150 before the flop and the player in seat 5 called. The flop came J 9 A and seat 5 led out with 75. Bellande made the call. The turn came the 5 and Bellande bet 150. He was called and the river came the 4 . Bellande bet 150 and was called. He turned over A 5 for two pair on the turn, while his opponent flashed A-K before mucking. Bellande was up to 3,500 at that point.
For Your Eyes Only
Amir Vahedi called a raise to 150 before the flop. The flop came J 7 4 . Vahedi bet 75 and was called. The 10 came on the turn. Vahedi checked and his opponent bet 150. Vahedi made the call and the river came 4 . Seat 10 bet 150 and Vahedi raised to 300. He was called and Vahedi showed his opponent, and only his opponent, his cards. Seat 10 mucked and Vahedi raked in the pot. Vahedi's stack was around 2,700.
The Flying Dutchman Can't Get Off the Ground
On a board showing 7 4 3 , Marcel Luske bet 75. He was called by one opponent and the turn came 10 . Luske led out again with 150 and his opponent raised to 300. Luske quickly folded and his stack is at 3,200, just 200 over what he started the day with.
Boyd On the Rise
On a board showing A 9 2 , seat 1 led out with a bet of 75. Dutch Boyd raised to 150 and seat 1 made the call. The turn was the 3 . Boyd bet 150 after the action was checked to him and his opponent made the call. Boyd bet 150 again when the J showed up on the river. His opponent made the call and Boyd showed down A 9 for two pair on the flop. He took it down and his stack improved to around 4,000.
The New "Say Hey" Kid, Or Maybe It's "Air" Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu has been very energetic at his table. First, Negreanu called 150 preflop. After the call, he started headbanging, perhaps to the music blaring from his headphones, or perhaps because he's Daniel Negreanu and he can do whatever he wants at a poker table.
The flop came 10 7 8 . Seat 8 bet 75 and seat 3 raised to 150. Negreanu was next to act. "Hey, hey, hey!" Negreanu said, bouncing around in his seat indicating the amount of action he was seeing. "Pow, pow!" he added, pointing at each player with each "pow." Negreanu mucked his hand.
Later, Negreanu got up from his seat, his empty food container in hand. As he approached the trash can, he put a sick crossover on a massage therapist that would have made Allen Iverson proud. He then set his feet, then faded away, launching the container into a nearby trash can.
"Count it!" he said. "And the foul!" Negreanu walked back to his seat, where around 4,000 in chips were waiting for him.

On the K turn he bet 600 and was called again. The river brought the 2 and Mortensen's 1,000 bet was instantly called. But when Mortensen turned over K-J, his opponent mucked and "The Matador" added to his creatively stacked chip stacks.
Jason Potter Busts Jennifer Tilly
Tilly moved her very short stack into the pot and was called by Potter. Potter showed A-Q, dominating Tilly's A-7. The board ran out 6-8-Q-4-7. Potter hit top pair and Tilly could not hit her gutshot straight draw on the river as she was sent to the rail.

Big Hands:
To say that the action has been painfully slow this past hour would be a gross understatement. Fortunately, the Tropical Room offers one saving grace in Table 6, which is home to Berry Johnston, Gabe Kaplan, and fairly decent amount of action.
Berry Johnston Wins a Decent Pot, Uncontested
On a flop of J 7 6 , Berry Johnston bet 75 and got three callers from seat 4, seat 6 and the button. The turn brought the 6 and Johnston bet 150. Everyone called except Seat 4. The river is the 9 and Johnston fired one more 150 bet at the pot. This time everyone folds, but Johnston rakes a fairly sizable pot considering.
Gabe Kaplan, Berry Johnston Get Scooped
On a flop of A J 8 , Gabe Kaplan bet 75 and Berry Johnston and the player in the cutoff position made the call. The turn was the 7 and this time Johnston led out with a 150 bet. Kaplan called and the cutoff raised to 300. Both Johnston and Kaplan call the raise. The river was the 3 and Kaplan and Johnston check to the cutoff who bet 150. They both call and the cutoff turned over 10 9 / K J for the straight, scooping the pot.
Gabe Kaplan Scoops a Small Pot
The player in the cutoff raised to 150 and both Gabe Kaplan and the player in the big blind made the call. Kaplan politely asks the dealer for a “medium” flop, which came A Q 10 . The cutoff bet 75 and Kaplan called while the big blind folded. The turn was the 3 and the cutoff bet 150, Kaplan called. The 10 hit the river and both players checked around. Kaplan turned over A 4 / 2 2 for two pair, aces and tens. Since there was no low hand, Kaplan scooped the pot.
Amir Vahedi Splits a Pot With Aces
On a flop of 8 7 3 , Amir Vahedi bet 75 and got two callers out of the cutoff position and the big blind. The turn brought the 10 and Vahedi checked to the cutoff who bet 150. The big blind folds while Vahedi made the call. The river was the 3 and both players check. Vahedi turned over A A for two pair(high hand) while the cutoff showed A 2 for the low hand. Vahedi seemed content with taking half the pot.

A Good Sweat
Apr 23, '08
Tom Dwan raises to 43,000 and is called by Amir Vahedi and Men Nguyen. David Chiu calls in the small blind and David Grey comes along in the big blind.
The flop comes J 8 3 and everyone slowly, and I mean slowly, checks to Nguyen who bets 90,000. Chiu folds and Grey decides to call after about a minute.
Dwan then thinks things over for about two minutes before asking Nguyen, "Do you have about 750k, Men?"
Men says nothing, but his stack is more like 850,000 since he has them stacked in 25's. About a minute later, Dwan raises to 265,000. Vahedi quickly folds and then Nguyen goes into the tank.
Nguyen reduces his stacks to 20's in between sips of his Corona as he surveys the situation. After about five minutes of a stare down match with Dwan, he decides to muck his cards.
Grey folds shortly afterwards and Dwan says to no one in particular, "That was a good sweat."
Dwan picks up almost 250,000 on the hand.
