New Chip Leader, Shane Schleger
Feb 25, '11
With 82,000 in chips, Shane Schleger has taken over the chip lead from Jason Mercier, who is still going strong with 80,000 of his own. Schleger got a nice chunk of his stack after flopping quads earlier in the day.
The former WPT final tablist has been making quite a bit of noise in online tournaments lately and was recently signed as a PokerStars Team Online Pro. With over double the average, he’s hoping to build on that success in the live arena.

An opponent of Nenad Medic moved all in on a board of J755 and Medic called him down. Medic turned up J7 for two pair but his opponent showed down J5 for the full house. Hands and Storylines:
Schleger misses out when opponent catches ace
After a player moved all in on the button, it folded back around to Shane Schleger. Schleger made a reraise and tossed in the majority of him remaining chips. A third player in the hand took some time to mull calling but folded. Schleger showed pocket queens and was in good shape against his oponent's A-9. But an ace came on the flop and Schleger found himself down to his starting stack of 3,000 chips.
Bill Chen hanging on
With blinds already at 100-200, a player with the starting stack of 3,000 has just 15 big blinds. A third of the field is already gone, and at the rate players are getting all their chips into the pot, another thousand will be gone in no time. Bill Chen had just 2,200 at the start of a hand and moved all in after the player under the gun raised to 475. After thinking for a minute the player folded and Chen showed A-K.

Jun 20, '08
Blinds: 500-1,000
Players Remaining: 68
Eliminations: Jason Lester
Notable Hands:
Gowen Doubles
Clonie Gowen bet the pot for 3,500 from under the gun, leaving her with just 200 left behind. Action folded around to the small blind, who made a minimum raise to 7,000, pushing out the big blind. Gowen called off her last 200, and the two players turned over their cards. Gowen showed K10, and was racing against the small blind's 33. The flop was good to Gowen, showing J105, and things only improved from there. The turn brought the Q and the river the A, completing a broadway straight. As Gowen raked in the pot, she turned around to inform Michael Binger, seated directly behind her at another table, of her good fortune. "I doubled up Michael!" Binger responded with a curt "Good job," and returned to the task of bullying his table.
Shaniac Takes One Out
At a much subdued table 3, Shane Schleger called against one player in seat 4, who showed AK. Schleger was in good shape holding AA, maintaining his lead as the board ran out 44783. Seat 4 was eliminated, and Schleger prolonged his stay at the table, still pending continued disruptive behavior.
Liv Boeree Lives
Liv Boeree reraised all in over the top of a completion from the small blind in seat 4. The player called, holding only 23 and calling for a counterfeit against Boeree's 55. For a moment it seemed that a counterfeit would come, as the flop ran AAJ, but the turn and river came K10, and Boeree survived with a double up.
Watkinson Whacks Another
Lee Watkinson opened for a raise to 3,000, and instantly called the all in reraise of the player in seat 2. Watkinson held AK, dominating his opponent's KQ. The flop brought a frightening J104, but Watkinson managed to avoid further trouble, eliminating the 2 seat and adding another tower of chips to his already formidable stack.

Big Hands:
Last Woman Gone, Gowen Busts
Clonie Gowen got all in on the river with the board showing 865A10. Gentleman Ben Roberts turned over 1010 for the rivered set and a very disapointed Gowen showed AJ. Gowen vocalized her mistake before leaving the table. Instead of raising Roberts off his hand when he bet the ace turn card, she said she had let him play to the river where he caught his set. And with that, the last woman in the field is gone.
Schleger Loses Big Pot...
The tournament is down to 4 tables, and one stands among the others. Clonie Gowen and Shane Schleger joined the table already featuring Ben Roberts and Eugene Todd. Schleger ran into a massive bump in the road when he got Keith Lehr all in and showed 10-10. Lehr showed J-J and the board came K-Q-5-5-9. Schleger lost a lot of chips in the hand and dropped to around 75,000, while Lehr approached 150,000.
... Eliminated Shortly After
A few hands after losing the big hand Schleger was short on chips and raised from early position, only to have Chris Bell raise him all in from the button. Schleger reluctantly made the call and Bell showed JJ. Schleger had only one live card, holding KJ. The board missed him, coming 109369 and Schleger was eliminated. Bell jumped over 100,000 in chips after the hand.
Hilger Loses Flip, Gone
Matthew Hilger got all in with big slick against Jan von Halle's pocket 9s. The flop came 9-8-3 and Hilger was in bad shape. The turn 2 and river jack didn't save Hilger and he was eliminated.

Note: Players are now on a 20 minute break.
Blinds: 1,000-2,000
Average Chip Stack:
Chip Counts:
Eliminations: Larry Wright, Cristian Dragomir, Jeff Langdon
Big Hands:
A Flesh Wound To The Chip Leader
Michael Binger called a short stacks all in and showed A-K against his opponent's 8-8. Binger missed and doubled his opponent up, but the players could only smile about it because the 10,000 that Binger lost in the hand doesn't really effect the 200,000 chips he still has.
Gowen is Hot
Clonie Gowen made a raise to 5,500 and was reraised by the player in seat 8 to 15,500. Gowen pushed all in and seat 8 called and flipped over AK. Gowen flipped over JJ. The board ran 106268 and Gowen's jacks held up and so far today she has run her chip stack up from the 8,900 she started the day with to over 70,000.
Gheung Sends Wright Packing
On a flop pf KJJ, Larry Wright moved all in and was called by Robert Cheung. Wright had hit the flop and showed K10, but Cheung hit the flop bigger, holding AJ. The turn was the 2 and the river was the 4, and Wright was eliminated.
Schleger Active Early
Shane Schleger has been adding to his stack. Schleger bet 3,000 on a A97 flop and the player in seat 8 made the call. Both players checked the Q turn and Schleger bet 6,200 on the 8 river card. Seat 8 tanked, eventually folding and giving Schleger a pot of around 17,000.
Schleger proceeded to raise and take the blinds in the next hand.
The following hand, however, he tangled with another chipleader in Michael Binger. Schleger raised again ang Binger called. Both players checked the AK4 flop, but Binger led out for 8,000 on the 7 turn and Schleger quickly mucked.
Caught Making a Move
Al Adler went all in after David Chicotsky reraised a pot from late position. Adler thought Chicotsky was trying to steal and he was correct. Adler showed AJ and Chicotsky showed J10. The board ran J5456 and Adler more than doubled to around 44,000.

End of Day 1A
May 31, '08
It took only 8 hours and 15 minutes of play today to whittle the day 1A field of 2,000 down to 225. Officials were forced to halt play early in order to ensure that day 1A and day 1B each produce a similar number of survivors, especially with the money bubble rapidly approaching.
With a fast structure and shallow starting stacks, the chips were flying fast and furious today. As a result, big-name players became hard to find as the daylight dwindled. Shane "shaniac" Schleger, second in chips, and Todd Brunson are two notables who will have deep stacks to work with on day 2. Also returning on Monday will be Asher Derei, John Murphy, Johannes Strassmann, and Matthew "all in at 420" Stout.
The players will all receive a much needed day off tomorrow and come back Monday to try and claim the first no-limit hold'em bracelet of the 2008 World Series of Poker.
Day 1B of this event will begin at noon tomorrow.

Big Hands:
Older Hinkle Brother Makes His Move
It has just come to our attention that Grant Hinkle, older brother of Blair "blur5f6" Hinkle, has vaulted up the leaderboard and currently sits with just over 75,000 in chips. Blair is playing in tommorow's field, but will have a long way to go to match his big brother.
Griffin Continues His Comeback
Gavin Griffin and his opponent were racing as Griffin flipped over 99 and his opponent had AK. The board ran out 77434 and Griffin's stack gained a much needed boost. He currently sits at 41,000.
Gazes Gone
At the same table where Griffin continued to stage his comeback, Bill Gazes met his demise. A shortstacked player moved his stack of 9,400 into the middle and Gazes was quick to call. The two revealed their cards:
Gazes: A-K
Opponent: T-T
the board was of no help to Gazes and he was eliminated.
Murphy Hanging in There
John Murphy raised to 2,500 in the cutoff. Only the big blind called and they saw a flop of 983. The big blind checked and, without much thought, Murphy stuck in a stack of yellow chips totalling about 15,000, putting his opponent all-in. After a bit of posturing the big blind folded, and Murphy's stack crept up to 35,000.
Strassmann Wins Blind Battle
After a button raise to 3,000, European Poker Tour final tablist Johaness Strassmann of Germany three-bet to 9,000 total, leaving himself only a few thousand behind. His opponent folded A-J face-up, earning a placative, "Nice fold" from Strassmann. The pot took Strassmann up to 34,000 in chips.
All-in at 10:45
Matt "All in at 420" Stout found aces at the right time to increase his stack to 36,000. After an under-the-gun raise, a player in middle position shoved all-in for 16,200. In the big blind, Stout looked down at two black aces and wasted little time before getting his money into the pot. The under-the-gun player folded and the middle position player showed AQ. The board came 55283 and Stout chipped up to 36,000. After the hand the under-the-gun raiser claimed to have folded AK, drawing equal amounts of plaudits and skepticism from the table.

Big Hands:
Schleger and Griffin waste no time
With a short stack all in and over 20,000 in the pot preflop, Gavin Griffin calls a bet of 7,500 made by Shane Schleger after a T95 flop. After the T comes on the turn, Schleger checks and Griffin bets just under 20,000 and then calls when Schleger moves all in for only 14,000 more. Both show surprisingly mediocre holdings: pocket eights for Schleger and QJ for Griffin. The river created a brief stir, though. It was the 8, giving Schleger a full house and Griffin a straight. The double-up gave Schleger roughly 110,000 chips and dropped Griffin to under 10,000.
Henry Tran takes step back
Some of the confidence Tran was showing earlier in the last level went away after a bad beat to a player with just over 10,000 chips. With pocket tens against J-9, Tran was in great shape until a jack came on the turn. The loss dropped Tran to a little over 50,000 chips.
Cernuto Busto
With 10 big blinds, John Cernuto moved his stack into the middle from early position. The big blind looked down to see A-K and called immediately. Cernuto turned over A-Q and found himself eliminated after the board brought no help.
Dan Druff doubles up
Todd "Dan Druff" Witteles got some much-needed breathing room with a double up to end the level. He got his chips all in preflop with pocket kings and saw them hold up against an opponents A-Q. With the pot he know has roughly 35,000 chips.
The remaining players are now on a 20-minute break as the tournament staff races off the $25 chips.

Big Hands:
D’Angelo Takes The Lead
Ryan D’Angelo won a massive pot to give himself the largest stack in the tournament. He raised pre-flop from middle position and got a call from the player directly on his left and John Cernuto in the big blind. On a flop of J94, Cernuto checked, D’Angelo put out a pot-sized bet and the player to his left – who had quite a stack himself -- set him all-in immediately. D’Angelo leaned back in his chair and moaned, “We’re gonna need a count. This is sick. This is sick.” After a few more reminders of how sick the situation was, he made the call and the players revealed their cards:
D’Angelo: AJ
Opponent: QJ
The turn came T giving his opponent and open-ended straight-draw in addition to his flush draw, but the river was the A, sending a mountain of chips D’Angelo’s way, bringing him to a total of nearly 90,000.
Roveto knocks out Alvarado
After committing most of his chips preflop, J.C Alvarado moved all in on the flop with A-5 and was called by John Roveto, who held A-Q. Alvarado flopped a gutshot straight draw, but did not catch a card on the turn or river and was eliminated.
Gazes takes a hit
After a short stack moved all in preflop, Bill Gazes reluctantly made the call with QT. His opponent flipped over AK and flopped a king to end the suspense. After the hand Gazes was left with under 20,000 chips.
Together at Last
Gavin Griffin was moved to Shane Schleger's table, putting two of the chip leaders on a collision course with one another. Matt "Allinat420" Stout immediately noticed the move and came over to the table, willing to bet that the two of them would be bust within two hours.
