Player Tags: Kathy Liebert, Bryan Devonshire, Matthew Vengrin Level 1 Update: Gavin Smith EliminatedMay 29, '10 Blinds: 25-25 Starting Stack: 3,000 Notable Eliminations: Gavin Smith Big Hands: Smith Forced to Fold Four players saw a flop of Q97 and everybody checked to the player on the button who bet 75 and was called by Gavin Smith. The turn card was the 6 and Smith checked again. The button bet 200 and Smith called one more time and saw the 10 hit the river. Smith checked and button took a minute or so to bet 400. Smith, visibly displeased at the bet, eventually let his hand hit the muck. Gavin Smith Eliminated Gavin Smith got the rest of his short stack in on a flop of 1099 with the 108 and was called by an opponent with the A10. Smith failed to draw out and was eliminated early on Day 1A. Bad Board, but Devo’s Kings Hold After Brock Parker limped under the gun, Bryan Devonshire raised to 100 on the button. The player in the small blind called, as did Parker. All three players checked it down as the board ran out A32J10. Devonshire tabled the KK, which was good for the pot. Tommy Vedes Loses Some Chips On a paired board, Tom Vedes bet 100 with the A7 for jacks and sevens and was called by an opponent with two eights in the hole. Vedes lost the small pot and is down to 2,700. Elimination at Lauren Kling’s Table Two players got it all in on a flop of QJ3, with one tabling QJ for top two pair and the other exposed pocket threes for bottom set. Bottom set held up and one of the first casualties of the tournament has hit the rail. Lex Veldhuis Eliminates a Player Lex Veldhuis was in the big blind with about 2,800 when the button raised to 75. The small blind called and Veldhuis raised to 325. The button made a quick call and the small blind folded. The flop came 942 and Veldhuis continuation bet 425. The button made the call. The 5 hit the turn and this time Veldhuis bet 850 and the button took awhile before calling. The river brought the A and Veldhuis took some time to consider before moving all in for 1,625. The button tanked for a few minutes and finally made the call for his tournament life. Veldhuis tabled A5 for two pair. His opponent mucked and Veldhuis raked in the large pot. He is at 5,700 after the hand. Left in the Deck: One Big-Blind Hand Over at Brock Parker and Bryan Devonshire’s table (Green 197), a hand was played with just one big blind. The tournament staff was called over to look at the problem in the early stages of the 2010 World Series of Poker. Tough Table Draws and Notable Entrants Prior to his elimination, poker pros Gavin Smith, Kara Scott, and Allen Kessler were sitting at the same table among a sea of unknowns. At the table right next door sits a member of the Card Player Family — Allyn Jaffrey Shulman. Allyn’s husband and Card Player Publisher, Barry Shulman, is also in the field. Some other tough draws include a table with Joe Bartholdi, David Plastik, Jamie Rosen, and Soheil Shamseddin. As well as a table that includes Tommy Vedes, Andy Black, Tom Marchese and Brandon Cantu. For such a big field, some unknowns got a pretty unlucky table draw. Lex Veldhuis Talks with Adam and Diego Poker pro Lex Veldhuis discusses the 2009 WSOP TV coverage that built a ton of buzz around his aggressive game, his lighthearted rivalry with Eli Elezra and how he took advantage of being on TV in a recent episode of ‘The Scoop’ brought to you by Full Tilt Poker. Level 6 Update: Eric Baldwin Struggles EarlyFeb 27, '10 Blinds: 200-400 with a 50 ante Players Remaining: 435 out of 745 Chip Counts: 1. Masaaki Kagawa — 125,000 Average Chip Count: 34,252 Notable Eliminations: Gavin Smith Big Hands: Eric Baldwin Gets Confused Call From Opponent The cutoff raised to 900 and Eric Baldwin reraised to 2,550 from the button. The flop came down 9 8 2 and both players checked. The turn was the 2 and the cutoff checked to Baldwin, who bet 4,750. The cutoff called and the river was the Q. The cutoff checked, Baldwin bet 8,700 and the cutoff eventually found a call. Baldwin turned over K J and his opponent took a bit before turning over Q J for a rivered pair. Baldwin was left a bit stunned and asked his opponent if he was going to try and represent one of the flushes if he didn’t pair. His opponent couldn’t find the words to explain his play and Baldwin was left with just 4,100 in his stack. Will Failla Doubles Up Will Failla came into the day severely short stacked, but found a way to double up with pocket aces, putting him back at 10,000. He still has work to do, but is no longer in the danger zone. Bryan Devonshire Doubles Bryan Devonshire was all in holding pocket kings against Matt Woodward’s A-Q. The board came out safely and Devonshire doubled up to 28,000 in chips. Jonathan Aguiar Takes Out Tyson Marks Tyson Marks was all in holding pocket sixes and was looked up by the pocket jacks of Jonathan Aguiar. The sixes failed to connect with the board and Marks was eliminated. Aguiar is now stacked with 47,000 in chips. Left in the Deck POY Madness On day 1, Card Player awarded both Eric Baldwin and Steve Gross with their resepective Player of the Year and Online Player of the Year trophies. Level 14 Update: Chaos For Steve O'DwyerDec 16, '09 Blinds: 3,000-6,000 with a 500 ante Players Remaining: 46 out of 329 Chip Counts: 1. Joe Elpayaa — 740,000 Average Chip Count: 429,000 Notable Eliminations: Andrew Robl Big Hands: Complete Chaos on Steve O’Dwyer’s Table Okay, see if you can keep up with this one. Steve O’Dwyer raised to 15,000 from under the gun and Tim Davis called. The flop came out 862 and O’Dwyer checked. Davis bet 15,000 and O’Dwyer check-raised to 47,000. Here’s where it gets crazy. Davis made the call and turned over A6, assuming O’Dwyer was all in. O’Dwyer had decided to bet his last 95,000 dark, which Davis didn’t see, nor call. The dealer, completely unaware that there was still pending action, then produced a jack and a four on the turn and river. The floor was called over and the dealer tried to tell her side of the story. Davis was quiet, presumably because he had no idea whether he had won or not, with O’Dwyer’s hand still concealed. O’Dwyer then reported the action and it was ruled that the turn and river would go back into the deck and two new cards would be turned and rivered. After she began shuffling, the table informed the floor that O’Dwyer had bet dark on the turn and that Davis still had to make a decision on whether or not to call the 95,000. The dealer then turned a deuce and Davis decided to call. O’Dwyer showed 1010 and was ahead, but now needed to fade a clean river to double up. The dealer pulled a nine out of the deck for the river, but in the process had forgotten to burn a card. O’Dwyer, clearly emotionally drained by seeing way too many cards try and take down his overpair, just slumped down in his chair, awaiting the true river. The “real” river was the 5 and O’Dwyer doubled up to about 330,000. Andrew Robl Bites the Dust After losing most of his stack in an earlier hand, Andrew Robl was short and looking for a double up. Antonio Esfandiari raised to 17,000 and Robl moved all in for 23,000 in the small blind. Esfandiari called and said, “It was nice playing with you, Robl” as he turned over the 108. Robl showed AQ, but failed to stay alive after the board ran 98569. Esfandiari Gets a Frustrating Chop Antonio Esfandiari raised to 18,000 and Soheil Shamseddin called in the cutoff. Both blinds called as well and the flop came down AQ2. The blinds checked and Esfandiari bet 41,500. Shamseddin called and the blinds folded. The turn was the Q and both players checked. The river was the A and Esfandiari checked. Shamseddin bet 50,000 and Esfandiari raised to 140,000. Shamseddin called and showed A7. Esfandiari showed AJ and both players chopped the pot with aces full. Esfandiari, clearly frustrated by the situation, had the better kicker and would have taken the pot with most river cards. Daniel Alaei Takes Chip Lead, Becomes First Millionaire We didn’t catch the action on the flop, but Daniel Alaei was all in on the turn of a board reading AA64 against Bryan Devonshire’s AQ. Alaei showed AK and the river was the 10 giving him the pot. Devonshire was left with 18,000 and Alaei now has 1,050,000 and the chip lead. Carter King Doubles Through Joe Cassidy Carter King moved all in for his last 85,500 and was called by Joe Cassidy in the blinds. Cassidy showed AJ, but was way behind to King’s aces and drawing dead by the turn. King is now up to about 190,000 in chips. Bryan Devonshire Eliminated by Glen ChornyOct 28, '09 Bryan Devonshire was all in on the button for 120,000 or so and called by Glen Chorny in the small blind. Devonshire showed A7 and asked the dealer to make it hold when Chorny showed KQ. The flop came down A33 and Devonshire appeared to be in good shape to double up. The turn was the J giving Chorny some help and he completed his runner-runner straight when the 10 hit the river. Devonshire disgustedly left the room as Chorny raked in the pot. Level 15 UpdateAug 24, '09 Blinds: 3,000-6,000 with a 500 ante Players Remaining: 24 out of 278 Average Chip Count: 310,000 Notable Eliminations: 27. Nick Schulman — $18,285 Hand of the Level: Bryan Devonshire raised in position and Todd Terry called from the small blind. The flop came out Q94 and after a series of bets and raises, both players find all the chips in the middle. Devonshire showed 108 for a flopped flush, but his heart sinks when Terry showed A7 for the nut flush. The turn and river came 45 and Devonshire was eliminated, shipping the 844,000 pot to Terry. Level Summary: Despite a few short stacks in the field, it took nearly half of the level before a player was sent to the rail in the money. Nick Schulman was that casualty, running pocket jacks into the pocket aces of Kevin Schaffel. Then, the room was stunned to see former chip leader Bryan Devonshire ousted from the tournament when he flopped a flush against the nut flush of Todd Terry. The resulting pot gave Terry a massive stack and he ended the day with 850,000, good for the chip lead.
