Michael Mizrachi Near The Top After Day 1CJul 09, '13 The final numbers are in after Monday’s day of action. With more than 3,000 players on Day 1C, the official field size for this year’s $10,000 buy-in WSOP main event officially reached 6,352 players, creating a total prize pool of $59,708,800. The winner of this year’s tournament will go home with a $8,359,531. A total 6,598 players entered the main event last year, so this year marks a decrease. In 2012, Greg Merson captured the first-place prize of about $8.5 million. One of the chip leaders after Day 1C was three-time bracelet winner Michael Mizrachi. “The Grinder,” as he is sometimes called, finished fifth in the main event in 2010. He finished with a stack of about 200,000, which was good for a top-five stack. Other notables who finished the day near the top of the counts included Freddy Deeb, Vanessa Selbst, Isac Haxton, Haralabos Voulgaris, Randy Lew, Joseph Cheong, Vivek Rajkumar, Marvin Rettenmaier, Jason Koon and Phil Ivey. Ivey has yet to make a final table this summer (actually his summer has been horrid since he plays essentially all the events yet cashed just once), but the main event could be his time to turn things around. He made the final table in 2009. finishing in seventh place. Ivey has had other deep runs in the main event before (2003 and 2005). Notable eliminations on Day 1C included Jeff Madsen, Jennifer Tilly, Shaun Deeb, Aaron Massey, Fabrice Soulier, Eric Buchman, Sam Farha, Huck Seed, Darryll Fish, Brandon Cantu, Emil Patel, Oleksii Kovalchuk, Phil Laak, Shawn Cunix, Jonathan Duhamel, Vanessa Rousso, Tom Schneider, Keith Lehr and Shane Schleger, who busted in the first level. Duhamel won the main event in 2010. Check out this video by CardPlayer TV on the prize pool announcement today. All three starting days are in the books. Check out the recaps for Day 1A and Day 1B. The surviving players from Day 1A and Day 1B return Tuesday at noon local time for Day 2AB. The remaining group from Day 1C returns Wednesday for Day 2C. Mizrachi amassed a stack of around 200,000. The Grinder made the main event final table in 2010, and obviously is looking to make a deep run again. He has made one final table this year at the WSOP. Mizrachi’s big hand of the day came when he held Broadway against an opponent’s inferior straight. He generally just chipped up with more modest pots throughout the day. Other notables who finished the day near the top of the counts included Freddy Deeb, Vanessa Selbst, Vivek Rajkumar, Marvin Rettenmaier, Jason Koon and Phil Ivey. That will wrap up play here on day 1C. Stay tuned for a recap of the day events, as well as complete chip counts from the field. Hands: Scott Seiver Stuck In Reverse Scott Seiver raised to 600 in early position and got two callers including a player in middle position and J.C. Moussa in the big blind. The flop came down K 9 3 and Seiver continued with a bet of 1,200. The middle position player called and Moussa folded. The turn was the 8 and Seiver check folded to a bet of 1,650. He now has just 16,475 in chips. Jake Cody Gets Back To Work Building Jake Cody hasn’t had a great day at the tables, but a few hands have gone his way this level to bring him closer to his starting stack. On a recent hand, a player raised and Cody called from the button. Vivek Rajkumar called from the small blind as did the big blind as well. The flop came 4 4 3 and everyone checked to Cody, who bet 1,500. Everyone folded and he chipped up to 19,000. No More Chips For Nacho A player raised from under the gun and Jose “Nacho” Barbero moved all in from the button for his last 5,425. The blinds folded and his opponent called, revealing pocket sevens. Barberto showed A Q, but was unable to connect on a board reading 9 3 2 5 10. The Grinder Gets Felted Michael Mizrachi fought hard to battle back after a cooler early on in the first level, but ultimately couldn’t find his way back to his starting stack. Mizrachi made his final move with K 10 and was called by pocket nines. The board failed to provide any help and Mizrachi was eliminated. Hands: Eric Froehlich Exits The Tournament Arena It took a good call and an ill-timed bluff, but Eric Froehlich is now on the rail after moving all in for his last 11,000 on a board reading 10 9 2 K Q with pocket sevens. His opponent came up with a call, showing pocket aces and took the pot to bust Froehlich. Mizrachi Storms Back With Turned Two Outer The featured table hasn’t been kind to Michael Mizrachi, but some of that bad luck turned around thanks to a recent double up. Mizrachi was all in preflop holding J J against the A K of Derek Bailey. The flop came A Q 6 and left Mizrachi looking for one of the two remaining jacks. Lucky for him, the J hit the turn and 3 hit the river, giving him the winning set and a new stack of 23,000 in chips. Rep Porter Runs Into A Cooler On a flop of J-J-7, 2011 WSOP bracelet winner Rep Porter was all in holding A-J, only to see his opponent turn over pocket sevens for the flopped boat. The turn and river failed to fill up Porter and he was sent packing. He’ll have to take comfort in another solid summer performance to ease the sting of busting so early in the main event. Corwin Cole Loses Race With Dead Money In The Pot Corwin Cole raised to 525 from under the gun and was called two spots to his left by a player in middle position. The small blind then went all in for his last 2,425 and Cole took some time before raising to 5,725 to isolate the all in player. The caller folded and Cole opened up A 8. He was pleased to see his opponent show pocket sixes for a race situation, but when the board rolled out K 9 2 7 Q, Cole was forced to ship over some of his chips. Fortunately for him, he still has slightly over his starting stack in front of him. Ashton Griffin Sent To The Rail Ashton Griffin was all in on a board of J-6-3-A holding A-J for top two pair, but he didn’t have enough chips to protect his hand, getting a call from a player holding K-Q. The river was a 10, completing the four-outer and sending Griffin home. According to his twitter account, Griffin failed to cash in any of the 25 events he played this summer. Notables Eliminated This Level: Anthony Yeh Hands: Bryan Colin Gets Lucky, Takes Early Chip Lead It’s only the first level and each player has 300 big blinds at their disposal, but that won’t stop a cooler from happening. Bryan Colin and another opponent got it all in preflop with Colin holding pocket kings and the other player holding pocket aces. The board brought a king, and not only do we have an early casualty, but Colin is now up to just over 60,000 in chips. Kevin Saul Scores An Early Knockout Kevin Saul three-bet an early position raiser and his opponent made the call. The two players then found a way to get it all in on a flop of Q 6 2. Saul showed pocket queens for top set and his opponent revealed A J for the nut flush draw. The turn and river fell 6 K and Saul’s boat prevailed over his opponent’s flush to give him a knockout and a new stack of 61,750. The Grinder In Trouble Early Over at the featured table on a board reading A 10 4 10, Mac Sohrabi bet and Michael Mizrachi put him all in. Sohrabi immediately called with A 10 for a full house and Mizrachi saw that he was drawing dead with J 10 for trips. The inconsequential river was the Q, giving Mizrachi a second-best flush and sending his stack spiraling to just under 14,000. Ashton Griffin Mounts a Comeback Ashton Griffin had a rough start to his day and found himself with less than half of his starting stack, but recently, he was able to get it all in with a flopped set of jacks. His opponent donated and now Griffin is back up to nearly the starting stack of 30,000. Poker Tweets: Card Player TV: Player Tags: Michael Mizrachi, Bryan Colin, Kevin Saul |
