In the hand where he took the upper hand Ashton raised to 240,000 preflop during Pot-Limit Omaha. Don Nguyen called and the flop fell AQ10. Ashton bet 270,000 and Nguyen called. The river was the 7h and the big blind checked fro a third time. Allemann bet 15,000 and the big blind finally let his hand go. Mueller Mucks to Fours Greg Mueller called an early position raise to 1,125 from the cutoff. The button called as well and the flop came Q52. The first player checked, Mueller bet 1,100, the button called, and the original raiser mucked. The turn was the 10 and Mueller bet 3,500 and was called. The river was the 2 and both players checked. Mueller mucked his hand when the button tabled 44. Mueller dropped to 11,500. McGowan Cracks a Set We caught up with the action on a flop of K610 and Kevin McGowan called the all-in shove from his opponent. McGowan showed J10 and his opponent tabled 66, good for a set. “Wow! I have no outs,” said McGowan. That is, until the dealer turned over the A on the turn, giving McGowan a straight draw. The bad beat was completed on the river when the Q fell, giving McGowan the nut straight. Shawn Marion Can’t Hold On On a flop of AQ7, Shawn Marion bet out 2,000 and was check-raised to 7,000 by the player in the small blind. After a little questioning by Marion, he made the call and the two saw the 5 land on the turn. The small blind moved all-in and Marion called off his last 7,800. Marion showed AK, giving him top pair with top kicker, but his opponent showed pocket sevens, giving him a set. The river was a meaningless 10 and the Dallas Mavericks star was eliminated at the end of day 1. Action folded back to the button who made the call. The flop ran 8Q6 and Shak fired 1,500. The button thought more a moment before letting his hand go. Shak had around 31,700 after the hand. Boyd’s Aggresion Earns Him One After a raise and reraise preflop, Ductch Boyd and Pierre Neuville saw a flop of 224. Neuville led from the small blind for 1,050 and Boyd quickly made it 3,150. Neuville disgustedly threw his cards into the muck and Boyd stays right around their starting stack. Chad Bastista Takes One Chad Batista made a raise to 275 from early position and called a three-bet to 875 from a player in middle position. The flop came 10Q9 and both players checked. The turn was the Q and Batista checked again. His opponent bet and Batista made a check-raise to 2,500 and his opponent quickly folded. Cowboys For Mizrachi Picking up the action after the board had run out 8734A, Michael Mizrachi fired 2,000 into a pot holding 7,000. His opponent in seat 6 tanked and then threw in the call. Mizrachi tabled KK and seat 6 mucked. Mizrachi took the pot and he was at 40,000. Raymer Done Greg Raymer moved all in for his last 2,600 and the next player shoved. Other players in the hand mucked and Raymer was isolated. Raymer: 88 The board ran out K10276 and Raymer could not crack aces to save his tournament life. Hennigan Takes One A player raised to 300 and John Hennigan called. The small blind reraised to 1,800 and Hennigan was the only caller. The flop was J83 and both players checked. The turn was the 9 and the small blind bet 2,025. Hennigan would have none of that nonsense as he raised to 5,100. His opponent mucked and Hennigan took the pot. He was at 38,000. Nick Schulman Busts Picking up the action on the flop, the board read Q97. Nick Schulman bet 1,200 and Hunter Frey made the call. The turn was the 4 and Schulman shoved for his last 6,550. Frey made the call with AQ but was trailing Schulman’s KK. That all changed when the river brought the Q, giving Frey trips and booting Schulman out the door on the first level of play. The player in seat 9 bet 5,200 and Sandra Naujoks made the call. The other two players in the hand mucked and the turn was the K. Seat 9 led out with 7,300 and Naujoks made it 20,000 to go. Seat 9 tanked for awhile but then mucked his hand. Naujoks took in the pot and she was at 105,000. Maria Ho Adds To Her Stack Picking up the action after the turn, the board read Q946. Maria Ho fired 3,000 and her opponent mucked. Ho took a small pot and she was at 36,000. Esfandiari Can’t Call The player in seat 5 raised to 1,600 and Antonio Esfandiari made the call from the button. The flop then came down Q87 and seat 5 led out with 2,200. Esfandiari raised to 5,300 and that’s when the ESPN cameras showed up. “I guess I wouldn’t mind getting knocked out on camera,” seat 5 said. He moved all in for about 20,000 more. Esfandiari simply mucked his hand and he was at 80,000. Hasting’s Stack Keeps Growing Brian Hastings was in a heads-up pot and on the turn the board read AJ47 and a player checked over to Hastings, who bet 7,000. The player who checked, called the bet and they went to the turn, which was the 4. There was another check and Hastings bet 15,000, which was called again. Hastings showed AQ and his opponent mucked. Hastings climbs to 92,000 after the pot. Seidel Gets Caught Erik Seidel raised from the cutoff and Greg Fishberg called from the small blind. The two saw a flop of K39 and Fishberg checked and called a bet of 3,000 from Seidel. The turn was the 10 and Fishberg checked and called again, this time 9,500 from Seidel. The Q was the river and Seidel fired 20,000 and was snap-called by Fishberg. Seidel just had a disappointed look on his face as he didn’t turn over his cards. Fishberg showed J10 and announced “straight,” which was good for the pot. Seidel falls to 17,000 and Fishberg is up to 88,000. Live Poker is Rigged Rob Saltiel was on the button and bet after his opponent checked on the turn with the board reading A83J. The player who checked then moved all-in and was called by Saltiel. Saltiel showed 88, giving him a set, but his opponent showed JJ, giving him a better set. Alas, the 8 fell on the river to give Saltiel the case eight to make quads and take the pot. Saltiel doubled up to 50,000. Veldhuis Isn’t Wearing His PF Flyers A player raised to 2,200 and was called by the cutoff, the button, and Lex Veldhuis in the small blind. The player in the big blind then squeezed and moved all-in for 17,100. It folded back around to Veldhuis who tossed in the call. Veldhuis showed 66 and he was off to the races against the AJ. The flop came A105 and Veldhuis was in a world of pain. The turn was the 7 and the river was the 8 and Veldhuis dropped to 42,000 in chips. Hennigan Lets One Go Jonn Hennigan and his opponent checked down a board of 10586 and on the river Q[[suit:river]] Hennigan’s opponent fired 7,100 into the pot. Johnny World threw his cards into the muck and was left with around 33,000 in chips. Cada Kicks One To The Curb Reigning champ Joe Cada faced a raise of 2,100 by the player in seat 8. Cada wasted little time raising to 6,000 from the button. Action folded back to seat 8 who moved all in for about 17,000 more. Cada made the call and they showed their hands: Opponent: AK Cada easily had his opponent, and the two went into a coin flip. The flop was great for Cada, running 2610 to give him a set. The A on the turn left his opponent drawing dead, and the J finished the board. Cada knocked out the player and chipped up to around 92,000 in chips. Grinder Bros. Keep Rolling Brothers Michael and Robert Mizrachi are seated at tables 288 and table 289 in the blue section. The ESPN camera crews are planted between the two tables, but the Mizrachi’s are focused on their A-game. In one hand, Michael and the player in the big blind called a 2,100 raise from the player in seat 5. The flop ran 295 and action checked to the Grinder who bet 3,000. Everyone else folded and Michael chipped up to around 105,000. Robert is among the chip leaders with around 225,000. Kevin Gates – 590,000 Notable Eliminations: Joe Cada Big Hands: Ng Can’t Call The player in seat 2 raised to 4,200 preflop and the player in seat 4 made the call. The action then folded to Evelyn Ng in the small blind and she repopped to 16,000. Seat 2 called while seat 4 got out of the way. The flop came down K102 and Ng led with 12,200. Seat 2 made the call and the turn was the A. Ng checked this time and seat 2 bet 16,000. That induced a fold from Ng and she was down to 88,000 after dropping that pot. Hennigan Sees A Flop The player under the gun raised to 4,500 and the action folded around to John Hennigan in the big blind. He decided to make the call and both players saw a flop of J52. Hennigan checked and his opponent fired 7,000. Hennigan uncapped his cards and mucked his hand and he was at 90,000. Joe Cada Eliminated Four players limped preflop only to see Joe Cada move all in for 67,800. The button was the only player who decided to look him up and they turned their hands: Cada: AQ Cada was racing for his chance to repeat and the flop looked promising when it fell K87, giving him a spade draw. The turn was the 7, the right color but wrong shape. The river was the 6, bricking out for Cada and he made his way to the rail. Corkins Bets Out The Competition Four players, including Hoyt Corkins, limped in preflop and saw the flop come 864. The action was checked around to Corkins and he fired 4,600. Everyone mucked and Corkins took down a small pot. His stack was anything but small, however, as he was up to 287,000. Mizrachi Confused By Play Michael Mizrachi opened for 5,100 from under the gun. The next player in seat 4 flatted and seat 5 did the same. Action then folded around to the big blind who moved all in for 6,400 more. The action was back on Mizrachi and he repopped for another 20,000. Seat 4 then put in another raise to 65,000. Seat 5 mucked and Mizrachi took a tank session as the ESPN cameras surrounded the table. Mizrachi eventually decided to muck and looked confused when his opponent tabled JJ. Mizrachi apparently did not understand why his opponent raised so much with just jacks. The big blind tabled AQ and never improved as he was eliminated. Mizrachi was down to 90,000. Steve Sung Eliminated On a flop of AJ710 Steve Sung bet 8,500 into a player on the button. Sung had just about 20,000 behind. His opponent bet enough to put him all in and Sung went into the tank. He eventually made the call and his opponent said it was a good call. Sung tabled the K10 and was ahead of the 97 of his opponent. However, the 8 on the river gave Sung’s opponent a straight flush. Sung was gone. Billy Kopp Coolered Billy Kopp three-bet a late position raise from the big blind. He was four-bet and Kopp smooth called. The flop came 884 and Kopp checked. His opponent checked behind. The turn brought the A and Kopp checked. His opponent bet big and Kopp moved all in. His opponent insta-called with the 88 and Kopp exposed the AA. Kopp was eliminated when the K fell on the river. Patrik Antonius Loses a Pot On a board reading Q9783 Patrik Antonius was faced with a 17,400 chip bet from an opponent. Antonius went into the tank before finally making the call. His opponent tabled the A7 for the nuts and Antonius dropped to 160,000 after the hand. Bernard Lee Loses a Pot On a board reading K973 Bernard Lee called a 27,000 chip bet from an opponent. The turn brought the A and Lee’s opponent checked. Lee checked behind and his opponent tabled the 106 for a flush. Lee mucked the AK and was down to 174,000 after the hand. Brandon Adams – $26,459 Big Hands: Brandon Adams Eliminated Omaha 8 Brandon Adams got the last of his chips in the middle against Marco Johnson on a flop of 7-5-3. Adams had the A-A-K-J, giving him just dry aces with no low draw, and Johnson flopped two pair and a low with his A-8-5-3. The turn was a 2 and the river was a 10 to eliminated Adams and vault Johnson to the top of the chip counts. Roman Yitzhaki Eliminated Omaha 8 Matt Glantz raised preflop on the button and Roman Yitzhaki three-bet from the big blind. Glantz called and the two saw a flop of Q74. There were a ton of raises that led to Yitzhaki being all-in. Glantz showed the AA55 and Yitzhaki held the AQ92. Glantz had an over pair and a bad low draw and Yitzhaki had top pair and the nut low draw. The turn was the J and the river was the K, meaning no low was possible and Yitzhaki was eliminated. Johnson Rolling Razz Marco Johnson completed and then bet fourth and fifth street against Eugene Katchalov. Katchalov led out on sixth and was raised by Johnson with their boards looking like this. Hennigan Eliminated Stud We missed the exact details of the hand, but a very short stacked John Hennigan was all-in against Michael Chow. At the end of the hand, Chow was stacking chips and Hennigan was walking away from the table. Michael Chow Eliminated Stud Michael Chow completed and was raised by Marco Johnson. Chow made the call and got all of his chips in the middle by fifth street against Johnson. Brian Townsend Eliminated Scott Fischman raised from the cutoff and Brian Townsend three-bet from the button. Carlos Mortensen then made it four bets from the big blind. Fischman folded and Townsend made the call. The flop was Q32 and Mortensen bet out 20,000. Townsend raised his remaining chips and it was only a little more to Mortensen who made the call. Townsend showed A3 and was up against the JJ of Mortensen. The Q came on the turn and the 5 on the river kept Mortensen in the lead and Townsend was eliminated in tenth place, leaving the final nine players to re-draw to the unofficial final table of nine. On a board showing J93KA and with 5,150 in the pot, the player in seat 1 checked to Men Nguyen. He tanked for quite awhile before finally checking his hand. Seat 1 showed KQ for a pair of kings. Nguyen showed AJ for two pair and took the pot. “You checked the river with two pair?” a player who was observing the hand quipped. “He’s a changed man,” John Duthie joked. Nguyen then chimed in with; “Three more Corona’s and then maybe.” He then added, “You wanna teach the Master how to play?” The other player quickly replied, “I’m trying to learn from you.” Everyone laughed and Nguyen was at 31,000. Lunkin Muscled Out Vitaly Lunkin raised to 800 preflop and action folded around to seat 4. He made it 2,500 to go and Lunkin was next to act. He spent a few moments in the tank, then released his hand into the muck. He was at 45,000 after the hand. Chan Ailing After a flop of 835, the player in seat 1 bet 2,000 and Johnny Chan made the call. The turn was the J and both players checked. The river brought the 3 and seat 1 led out with another 2,500. Chan made a quick call and seat 1 showed 99. Chan could not beat it and mucked his hand. He was down to just 8,200 after losing that pot. It Was That Damn Sasquatch Adrian Gavile and John Kranyak were involved in a hand that resulted in Gavile making quad jacks against Kranyak’s ace-king. As a result, Gavile won the $100 prize package offered by the official sponsor of the 2009 WSOP, Jack Link’s Beef Jerky. The prize package essentially consists of $100 worth of beef jerky. Play was halted for almost five minutes as the floor awaited on the Jack Link’s Sasquatch to arrive and give Gavile his prize. However, the Sasquatch was nowhere to be found and the floor ruled for play to continue. Gavile would just have to wait for the Sasquatch to make his presence known in order to receive his prize. Yang Thrown Off The Boat On a flop of K85, Yang bet 2,700 and his opponent raised to 6,525. Yang made the call and the turn brought the 5 and the opponent fired 8,000. Yang raised to 20,000 and his opponent moved all in for 6,150 more. Yang made the call and tabled KQ for two pair and a flush draw. His opponent showed 88 for a full house and the river was the J, sending the pot to the full house and Yang was down to just 6,600. The big blind also came along and the flop came down 965. Action was checked to Hennigan and he bet the pot with 3,500. The big blind made the call and seat 4 mucked. The turn was the A and both players checked. The river was the 4 and the big blind checked to Hennigan, who fired 15,000. The big blind tanked for a while and then called. Hennigan tapped the table, signifying he was caught with nothing and the big blind took down the pot with just 75, a pair of fives. Hennigan was down to 53,000 after that failed bluff attempt. He would later bust. The Hammer Of Thor The player in seat 6 raised to 1,500 preflop and Thor Hansen made the call from the big blind. The flop came down Q84 and both players checked. The turn was the K and Hansen led out with 2,200. Seat 6 called and the river was the A. Hansen led out again, this time for 7,200. Seat 6 gave up his hand and Hansen was at 44,000.
