Melanie Weisner Chips Up Against Jared Bleznick It’s not much of a hand, but it’s an excuse to report on Melanie Weisner’s stack. Jared Bleznick raised to 500 from middle position and she called out of the big blind. The two players checked down a board of A97Q2 and Weisner fired 675 to take it down and increase her chip count to 39,000. Lucky Chewy Value Bets The Worst Hand Andrew Lichtenberger raised to 600 from the cutoff and Andreas Hoivold reraised too 1,500 behind him on the button. Lichtenberger called and the flop fell K104. Hoivold continued with a bet of 2,050 and Lichtenberger called. The turn was the 7 and both players checked. The river was the 3 and Lichtenberger bet 4,800. Hoivold thought it over for about a minute before calling. Lichtenberger showed KQ for top pair, but Hoivold showed 65 for a straight. After the hand, Lichtenberger was down to 19,000 and Hoivold chipped up to 46,000. Player Tags: Cornel Cimpan, David Sands, Vanessa Selbst, Andreas Hoivold, Andrew Lichtenberger |

Cornel Cimpan Quads Up to Double Up Cornel Cimpan raised to 3,500 and Michael Watson reraised to 9,000 in the cutoff behind him. Cimpan thought it over before making the call, leaving himself with just 15,100. The flop came down 1044 and Cimpan checked to Watson, who put him all in. Cimpan instantly called with 44 for quads and Watson showed AQ, drawing dead. The inconsequential turn and river were the K7 and Cimpan doubled up to about 50,000 in chips. Watson is now on the short stack with about 22,000. Hasan Habib Gets Flush To Win a Huge Pot From John Juanda We caught up with the action on a flop of K64. Habib then went into the tank, pondering his decision with his last 40,000 in front of him. Eventually, he put it in, Juanda called and the two players revealed their hands. Juanda showed pocket sixes for a set and Habib showed A10 for a flush draw. The turn and river came 29, and Habib doubled up. A few hands later and Habib was at 172,000, while Juanda has to start all over with 67,000. Left In the Deck: Registration is now closed. The official numbers and prize pool should be announced shortly. Card Player TV: The folks over at Card Player TV recently caught up with Yevgeniy Timoshenko during the break to discuss his 2009 campaign. Player Tags: Cornel Cimpan, John Juanda, Hasan Habib, Michael Watson, Joseph Serock, Yevgeniy Timoshenko, Hunter Frey Level 7 Update: POY Contenders Take HitsDec 15, '09 Blinds: 500-1,000 with a 100 ante Players Remaining: 230 out of 320 (unofficial) Chip Counts: 1. Antonio Esfandiari — 310,000 Average Chip Count: 83,478 Notable Eliminations: Adam Levy Big Hands: Juanda Doubles Up, Marco Johnson Out, and Yevgeniy Timoshenko Takes a Hit Marco Johnson moved all in for 10,600 under the gun and John Juanda (pictured right) made the call from the cutoff. Yevgeniy Timoshenko reraised to 13,600 and Juanda reraised to 26,000. Timosehnko reraised all in and Juanda made the all-in call. Their cards: Timoshenko: JJ Board: AA64K Juanda made a full house and he doubled up on the hand to 150,000 and Marco Johnson was eliminated. Timoshenko watched his chips fall to 45,000 on the hand. Their cards: Phan: AK Board: 10-6-4-6-K Phan won the hand and he grew his stack to 90,000 POY Watch The top two POY contenders have each taken a hit during the second level on day 2. Cornel Cimpan (pictured left) held pocket jacks but they fell to the A-J of his opponent and his stack is now down to 30,000. Yevgeniy Timoshenko also held jacks when he lost a large chunk of his stack (see hand above). They lost to the pocket kings of John Juanda and Timoshenko now holds just 45,000. Timoshenko recovered at the end of the level when he doubled up with pocket tens and now holds 90,000. Here is a look at the chip counts for the POY contenders left in play: Soheil Shamseddin: 133,000 Player Tags: John Phan, Cornel Cimpan, John Juanda, Kenny Tran, Marco Johnson, Yevgeniy Timoshenko Level 13 Update: Eric Baldwin Clinches 2009 POY AwardDec 16, '09 Blinds: 2,500-4,000 with a 500 ante Players Remaining: 61 out of 329 Chip Counts: 1. Joseph Elpayaa — 740,000 Average Chip Count: 323,606 Notable Eliminations: Yevgeniy Timoshenko POY Watch — We Have a Winner — Eric Baldwin Wins 2009 Card Player POY! Yevgeniy Timoshenko was eliminated during level 13 and Eric Baldwin (pictured right) has clinched the 2009 Card Player Player of the Year award. Baldwin will receive a $10,0000 seat in the 2010 World Series of Poker main event and a trophy in recognition of his accomplishment. Baldwin racked up a total of 6,994 points to win the award. He made a very impressive 17 final tables in 2009 and he won four tournament titles, including a win in a $1,000 no-limit hold’em with rebuys at Bellagio this past weekend that served as an exclamation point on his victory. Congratulations to Eric Baldwin! Baldwin takes over the title from the 2008 POY, John Phan, who scored 6,704 points to win last year’s award. Phan was also eliminated during the 13th level of the tournament today. One player in the POY top 10 is still active in today’s field and it is Soheil Shamseddin, who holds 510,000. Shamseddin won’t be able to catch Badlwin in the point standings but if he makes the final table in this event he will jump to fourth place, and if he wins he will finish in second place behind Baldwin. Big Hands: Vivek Rajkumar Eliminated Vivek Rajkumar was all in on a board of 975 with pocket tens in the hole and Brent Hanks had him covered in chips with J8 in the hole. The turn brought the 5 and the river fell A to give Hanks a flush and eliminate Rajkumar. Vadim Trincher Eliminated Vadim Trincher (pictured left) moved all in preflop from the small blind and seat three made the call from the cutoff. Their cards: Trincher: 1010 Board: Q73JK Trincher was eliminated on the hand. John Phan Eliminated David Pham raised to 10,500 from middle position preflop and John Phan reraised all in for 40,000 behind him. Kenna James then reraised all in over the top of Phan, which induced the big blind and Pham to fold. The two live players then flipped over their cards: Phan: 77 Board: 982J3 James won the hand with a set of nines to grow his stack to 160,000 and Phan was eliminated on the hand. Player Tags: John Phan, Cornel Cimpan, Kenna James, Vadim Trincher, Soheil Shamseddin, Eric Baldwin, V R, Brent Hanks, Yevgeniy Timoshenko Level 12 Update: Chad Batista Wins Monster PotDec 16, '09 Blinds: 1,500-3,000 with a 400 ante Players Remaining: 88 out of 329 Chip Counts: 1. Chad Batista — 730,000 Average Chip Count: 225,000 Notable Eliminations: Dani Stern Big Hands: Chad Batista Gifted A Ton of Chips A man known by the table as “the French guy” opened for a raise and Mark Gregorich reraised all in for his last 34,700. Chad Batista called behind him and Mr. French called as well. The flop came down J83 and Batista bet 30,000. Unknown guy then reraised a handful of big chips to about 150,000 and Batista snap shoved all in. The Frenchman insta-called for his last 120,000 or so, showing AK. Batista showed bottom set of threes and the table started grumbling about running spades. The turn was the 5 and Batista let out a groan while the rest of the table ducked for cover, anticipating a possible blow up. Instead, the river was the 7 and Batista safely avoided any bad beats. He left the room regain his composure while the dealer spent a few minutes moving chips across the table. Gregorich never showed his hand, but apparently held A-Q. Meanwhile, Batista is looking at a stack of about 750,000. We’re guessing, however, since he has yet to organize the pile in front of him. Mike Matusow Doubles Through Abe Mosseri Mike Matusow was all in holding AQ against the JJ of Abe Mosseri. The flop came queen high and Matusow doubled up to 105,000 in chips. Mosseri was left with 140,000, but got it all back shortly afterwards. Abe Mosseri Doubles Through Barry Greenstein Barry Greenstein raised to 8,000 and Abe Mosseri called on the button. Greenstein continued with a bet of 11,000 on a flop of 964 and Mosseri raised to 30,000. Greenstein put him all in and Mosseri called with J10 for a flush draw. Greenstein could only show 87 for an open-ended straight draw and failed to hit when the turn and river came 6Q. Mosseri is now back up to 275,000, while Greenstein fights the short stack with 45,000. Cornel Cimpan Eliminated by Shawn Buchanan Cornel Cimpan found himself all in holding pocket queens against the pocket jacks of Shawn Buchanan. A jack on the board was unfortunate for Cimpan and he failed to catch up, busting from the tournament. This means only Yevgeniy Timoshenko can catch Eric Baldwin for Player of the Year honors. Howard Lederer Eliminated by Curt Kohlberg Howard Lederer was all in and in great shape holding A-K against Curt Kohlberg’s K-Q, but a queen in the door put him in danger of busting. The turn gave him more outs with a wheel draw, but Lederer failed to catch up and was eliminated from the tournament. Kohlberg is now a big stack with 440,000. Erik Seidel Watches Aces Go Down in Flames Erik Seidel was all in holding pocket aces against the pocket nines of Carter King. The board ran out four spades, however, and Seidel’s aces were flushed away. King now sits with 175,000 in chips. POY Watch Erik Baldwin busted yesterday to Tom Dwan, but he’s not one for leaving his Player of the Year status to fate. Instead, Baldwin did the math and realized that if he wins today’s $500 side event, he would forced both Timoshenko and Cimpan to finish one spot higher in this tournament. Now that Cimpan is gone, only Timoshenko can challenge him. Timoshenko would need to finish in the top two to pass him, but if Baldwin can somehow score another win, Timoshenko would need to win this tournament outright in order to claim the award. Brunson, who registered late in level 7, is now down to 28,000 in chips. Hunter Frey Eliminated by Joe Serock In a glorified coinflip, Hunter Frey was all in holding AK against Joe Serock’s pocket nines. The board ran out 822610 and Frey was eliminated from the tournament. Serock now has a massive stack of 192,000 chips in front of him, by far the most at his table. Hasan Habib checked, John Juanda bet 8,000 and Yevgeniy Timoshenko called. Tom Dwan passed and Habib check-raised to 26,000. Juanda thought for a bit before raising to 53,000 and Timoshenko folded. Dutch Boyd – 133,000 Card Player Chip Counts: Matthew Hilger – 68,000 Notable Eliminations: Ivan Demidov Big Hands Ivan Demidov Eliminated The player on the button raises to 1,200, Ivan Demidov reraises to 5,450, Dwayne Stacey calls from the big blind and the player on the button folds his hand. The flop comes 1065, Demidov moves all in for 225 and Stacey calls. Demidov: 76 The case six flops, giving Demidov middle pair and Stacey middle set. The turn and river are the 5 and the 5, no help to last year’s runner-up who is now eliminated from the tournament. Paul Snead Eliminated On the flop of 1097 Paul Snead was all in with an unknown player versus John Racener. Their cards: Racener: K2 The 6 fell on the turn, giving Racener his king-high flush. Snead turned two pair and had four outs to make a full house while the unknown player was drawing dead. However, the 4 hit the river and Snead was eliminated. Racener is now at 79,000 Phil Ivey Eliminates an Opponent Phil Ivey called the 8,825 chip all in of Ketul Nathwani. Ivey tabled the AQ while Ketul exposed the AJ. The board ran out 863K9, as Ivey took the pot and is up to 82,000. Cornel Cimpan Folds to All In On a board of 86658, Cornel Cimpan called a 3,500 bet from a player in middle position. The 10 fell on the river and the same player bet all in for 15,500. Cimpan went into the tank before finally mucking. The recent winner of the L.A. Poker Classic is at 60,000 in chips. Shawn Cunix Can’t Lose On a flop of 876, the player in the small blind bets 1,500, the player in seat 3 calls and the dealer burns and turns the 6. Shawn Cunix objects, calling for a floorperson as the turn card was dealt before he was able to act. The floorman comes over and makes the ruling. The turn card is pulled back, and Cunix raises all in for a total of 10,000 from the button. The small blind tanks for several minutes before releasing the hand. Seat 3 also folds as Cunix rakes the pot, revealing 96 for the open-ended straight flush draw. Glen Chorny Wins Pot by Limping In Glen Chorny was the beneficiary of perhaps the worst possible dealer miscue. Chorny limped in for 300 and action was folded around to a player in the cutoff who raised the 800. Both blinds folded and the dealer took the cutoff’s hand and mixed the cards together, leaving Chorny with his hand. Clearly not realizing Chorny had limped in, the dealer started moving the pot over to the cutoff. When everyone realized what she was doing, she stopped and a floor person was called over. About five minutes later, after much debating and recounting of the mistake, the floor staff ruled that Chorny wins the pot since he was the only one left with a live hand after the dealer mixed the raiser’s hand in with the deck. Chorny offered to just take back his 300 and let the cutoff take his raise back and the rest of the pot, but Chorny was awarded the pot which included the 800 raise from the cutoff. The player who had 800 chips taken by the dealer looked visibly upset. The same type of ruling would happen regardless of the bet size. Left in the Deck: The players are currently on a 20 minute break. Player Tags: Cornel Cimpan, Paul Snead, John Racener, Glen Chorny, Ivan Demidov, Dwayne Stacey |
