Level 2 Update: Michael Mizrachi, Phil Ivey, Jacobo Fernandez Eliminated
May 31, '09
Blinds: 25-50
Players Remaining: 2,900 out of 3,021
Notable Eliminations:
Phill Ivey
Michael Mizrachi
Jonathan Little
Jacobo Fernandez
Big Hands:
Jimmy Fricke Doubles Up With Quads
On a flop of 7 7 8 , Jimmy Fricke moved all-in for 1,125, a little less than half the starting stack for the tournament. His opponent in seat 8 went into the tank before finally calling. Fricke immediately flipped over the nuts of 7 7 . His opponent sheepishly turned over the 9 9 and needed runner, runner perfect to eliminate the 2007 Aussie Millions runner-up.
Dale Pinchot Gets Pot-Comitted
On a flop of J 10 9 , the player in seat 4 bets 350 and Dale Pinchot raises to 950. The player in seat 9 moves all in behind him for a total of 1,325. The original bettor folds and Pinchot calls the 425 raise. Pinchot show J 10 for top two pair, but seat 9 turns over 10 10 for middle set. The turn and river are the K and the 9 , no help for Pinchot who is left with 1,800 after this hand.

Phil Ivey Flops Flush, Is Eliminated On The River
Holding the 10 8 , Phil Ivey got it all-in on the flop of A J 7 against the set of jacks of Nick Derke. The turn didn’t pair the board, however the A on the river gave Derke a full house and eliminated the 5-time bracelet winner.
Jacobo Fernandez Eliminated
With 525 already in the pot on a flop of J 7 4 , first to act, Jacobo Fernandez checks to the player in seat 6 who bets 400. Fernandez raises to 1,025, leaving himself with just 700 behind. Seat 6 tanks before putting Fernandez all in; Fernandez is covered. Fernandez calls and turns over Q Q for the overpair while seat 6 shows 8 7 for middle pair. The turn is the 8 , giving seat 6 two pair and the 3 on the river sends Fernandez to the rail half-way through Level 2.
Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi Eliminated
After raising to 125 pre-flop with the 10 8 , Michael Mizrachi saw a flop of 8 5 4 with three other players. Action was checked to Mizrachi who moved all in for about 1,000 total. Hands were folded until an opponent snap called with pocket fours, for bottom set. The turn of the 7 put The Grinder ahead, but his opponent filled up on the river as a five fell. Just like Ivey, The Grinder was eliminated with a flush against a rivered full house.
Left In The Deck:
The $1,000 tournament, the largest non-main event field in the history of poker, has been closed for registration.

Jacobo Fernandez Eliminated
Feb 15, '09
Jacobo Fernandez was just eliminated shortly before dinner when his set of queens fell to Michael Mizrachi. The Grinder spiked the A on the turn to go with the two aces he held in the hole. Fernandez had moved his short stack all in with pocket queens and the flop had delivered him a third, but it wasn't enough for Fernandez to survive.

Mike Matusow was all in preflop with pocket kings against Jacobo Fernandez and his pocket nines. The board ran out safely for Matusow and he doubled up to 1.2 million. Fernandez was left with just six big blinds and was eliminated a few hands later when Amnon Filippi rivered a flush.

Short stacked Hunter Frey was all in holding Q J against Brett Richey's 9 7 . The board came K 9 8 5 2 and Frey was eliminated in 21st place.
Captain Tom Ships Out
Captain Tom Franklin was all in holding pocket queens on a flop of K J 10 . Ben Straate made the call with top set of kings. Steven Landfish Goes From Chip Leader to Out
Despite holding the chip lead for about an hour earlier in the day, Steven Landfish was eliminated when his pocket sixes lost a race to Hoyt Corkins A Q . Big Hands and Storylines:
Kenna James Loses Pot, Not Looking Hot
On a flop of 10 9 7 , a player made a bet of 2,500. His lone opponent, Kenna James, made the call and the dealer put down the Q on the turn. After several moments of deliberation, James’ opponent threw six yellow 1,000 chips across the line. James mucked his cards and finished the hand with less than 12,000 in chips.
Bjorin Struggling
With one limper into the pot for 300, a shortstacked Chris Bjorin raised to 1500. Both blinds folded and the limper called to see the flop come K 9 5 . Bjorin led out for 2000, but was then check-raised to 6000. Bjorin, now with only 8900 remaining in chips, laid his hand down.
Zolotow Still Steady
Steve Zolotow was in the big blind, and after an opening raise to 725, the small blind called and Zolotow did the same. The flop came J 6 5 , and all three players checked. The 3 came on the turn, and when the small blind checked Zolotow bet out for 1100. Both players folded, and Zolotow improved his chip stack to 21,800.
Bell Lays One Down
Chris Bell called a 1225 bet on the turn with teh board reading J 5 5 4 . After the A hit the river, Bell checked and his opponent bet 2675 into the pot. Bell folded, but remains with a healthy 39,250 in chips.
David Dawkins Draws Diamonds, Dodges Disaster, Doubles
David Dawkins, sporting a series of tattoos on his arms and a name patch identifying him as “Evil”, just found himself in a heap of trouble. An early position player limped and then another player made it 1,600 total. Dawkins in the big blind – unfazed by this development (or perhaps too intoxicated to even notice it) – moved all-in for 8,500. Action folded back around to the raiser who made a quick call with A A . Dawkins flipped over A 6 , but was given some good news when the flop came J 4 2 . Dawkins asked the dealer for a diamond and, wouldn’t you know it, the 10 landed on the turn. The 4 on the river was inconsequential and Dawkins doubled up to 17,000.
Two hands later Dawkins continued his, let’s say, “loose aggressive” style of play when action folded around to him on the button and he moved all-in for over 40 big blinds. Action made it to the big blind who had some thinking to do. Dawkins looked him in the eye and told him, “I’ve got it.” After a few more seconds of thought, the young man folded.
Bill Edler Flops Big
With the board reading 6 5 4 8 3 , two players were left in the hand. Action was on Bill Edler who quite openly admitted, “I hate myself for not betting what I think is the best hand.” After Edler’s check, his opponent checked right behind, tabling Q 4 . Edler’s hand was indeed good; he showed 3 2 for a flopped straight. That hand brings Edler up to 26,000.

Big Hands and Storylines:
Kyle Kloeckner Eliminates Nathan Doudney
Tim West Raised to 35,000 pre-flop and was called by Kyle Kloeckner, Nathan Hagens, and Nathan Doudney. On a flop of 6 3 3 , West checked, Kloeckner checked, and Hagens checked. When action came around to Doudney, he didn’t think for too long before betting 100,000. West quickly folded, but Klockner, perhaps suspecting Doudney of a steal, raised to 300,000. Hagens folded and Doudney quickly moved all-in for his final 60,000. Kloeckner, priced in, made the call with K J J 9 . Doudney turned over a full house: 6 3 7 5 . Kloeckner, drawing to only a jack, had scarcely asked his tablemates if any of them had folded a jack when the dealer flipped up the turn: J ! Things had turned upside-down for Doudney and now he was looking for the last trey in the deck to win the pot. Not only was the river not the case trey to save Doudney, but it was the case jack.
I guess that answers Kloeckner’s question.
After raking in the pot and stacking his chips, it appears that Kloeckner is our new chip leader with 865,000.
Thomas Wahlroos Eliminates Tino Lechich
Thomas Wahlroos raised to 35,000 pre-flop and Francisco Azares made it 110,000. Tino Lechich said, “Alright. You’ve got one.” Before moving his final 50,000 all-in. Wahlroos chimed in, “You’ve got two,” and, covered by Azares’s bet, moved all-in. The three revealed their hands:
Azares: K K 5 2
Lechich: A K J J
Wahlroos: A A 10 2
The flop was a very safe one for Wahlroos: 9 9 3 . The turn 6 was nearly as innocuous, though it gave Azares a gutshot straight-draw. When the river blanked, Wahlroos was jolted up to 190,000 while Azares was left with only 90,000; Azares would be eliminated only a short time later.
Michael Guzzardi Eliminates Thomas Wahlroos
Michael Guzzardi raised to 25,000 from early position and was called by three players: Thomas Wahlroos in late position, and Layne Flack and Kevin O’Donnell in the blinds. The flop came Q 10 6 and the blinds checked. Guzzardi bet 65,000 and Wahlroos almost instantly moved his stack of 163,000 into the pot. Flack insta-folded but O’Donnell had a much tougher decision to make. “I wish I knew the math like you guys. I should have gone to school,” said O’Donnell. Eventually O’Donnell folded, and that decision turned out to be the right one as Guzzardi called and showed A J 8 7 for the nut flush. Wahlroos showed Q Q 7 7 for top set, and was hoping to fill up on a later street. Unfortunately for Wahlroos the turn and river came 8 and 2 and, not long after his double-up, he was eliminated. Guzzardi now has 810,000 in chips.

Big Hands and Storylines:
Jacobo Moving Toward Final Table Number Three
Jacobo Fernandez just brushed aside another pesky impediment standing in the way of his third final table at this year’s World Series. This time the impediment came in the form of Loren Klein. Fernandez and Klein got their chips all in on a flop of K 7 3 . Fernandez showed K K J 4 for top set while Klein tabled A A Q 6 for a pair of aces. The turn and river were the 3 and 6 and just like that Jacobo made another addition to his growing stack of chips. He currently has 450,000.
Forrest on Fire
Ted Forrest just added to his growing stack in a hand against Frank Vizza. Forrest raised to 25,000 from late position and Vizza called from the button. The flop came A Q J and Forrest checked. Vizza bet 45,000 and Forrest called him. Both players checked the T turn and Forrest bet out big – a pot-sized bet – on the river 2 . Vizza tanked, focusing on the newly dealt river card, but eventually laid his hand down. That pot takes Forrest up to a commanding 380,000.
Azares Does in the Powell
Ted Forrest limped in late position and Julian Powell and Francisco Azares in the blinds joined him in seeing a 7 6 4 flop. Powell bet 20,000, leaving himself only about 5,000 behind. Azares, short stacked himself, made a pot-sized raise that put him all-in. Forrest mucked his hand and the two showed their cards:
Powell: A J 8 7
Azares: A K 5 4
Powell had top pair and a jack-high flush draw along with 3 outs to a straight. Azares though had the nut flush draw along with an open-ended straight-draw. The turn was the 6 and Powell was still ahead with two-pair, but a 2 on the river sent the Aussie packing. By adding Powell’s few chips to his collection, Azares is now up to 120,000 on the day.

Kloeckner: A A 7 10
Young: Q Q A 6
Young flopped a set of ladies, turning Kloeckner's bullets. Young also had one of Kloeckner's outs in the A . The turn was the 6 and the river brought the case 6 , doubling up Young with his queens full house. Kloeckner was down to 280,000.
Ankenmann Sends One Packing
Jerrod Ankenman called Varahram Vardjavand's all in bet and the players turned over their hands.
Ankenman: A A 9 8
Vardjavand: A A 6 2
Both players showed aces, so their other cards would likely decide the pot. The flop came J 8 7 , giving Ankenman a gutshot straight draw. The turn made his straight when the 10 showed up. The river was the 8 and Akenman knocked out a player and improved his stack to 270,000.
Fernandez Takes a Pot
The player in seat 5 raised to 10,000 and Jacobo Fernandez made the call. The flop came down A 7 3 . Seat 5 checked and Fernandez bet 5,000. His opponent called and the turn was the Q . Both players checked and the river brought the 6 . Both players checked again and then they turned their hands.
Fernandez: Q Q 8 8
Seat 5: 10 10 A J
Fernandez turned a set of queens and took down the pot.
