End of Day 2: John Kabbaj Way Out In Front, Laps The Field
Jun 25, '09
Day 2 of Event no. 45 – $10,000 World Championship of Pot-Limit Hold’em has concluded for the night and just fourteen players remain. Overnight Day 1 and most of Day 2 chipleader Michael Brummelhuis was eliminated early in the money (21st – $24,066) after relinquishing the chiplead to Bryn Kenney (22nd – $24,066) sometime after the dinner break. Kenny would cruise a few levels with the lead until he got it in bad against Kevin Stammen (23rd – $24,066) and current chipleader John Kabbaj in a massive, three-way all in, double elimination pot. Kabbaj would grab the chiplead this hand and not look back. By the end of Level 20 Kabbaj had amassed nearly a quarter of the chips in play, lapping the field with 2,026,000; more than double J.C. Alvarado who currently sits in second place (924,000).

Manelic Minaya: 145,000
Greg Alexander: 145,000

Eliminations: Eugene Todd
Big Hands:
Todd Busted
A player was already all in for 15,000 total. Action was on the button who made the call. Eugene Todd then pushed his remaining 60,000 into the middle from the big blind. The button called and Todd showed KK. The first all in player showed a pair of ladies, QQ, while the button turned over 1010. Todd was in prime position to triple up until the flop spiked a 10 on the board, giving the player on the button a set. The turn and river were blanks and Todd was sent to the rail.
Tran Doubles One Up
The player under the gun moved all in for about 15,000. The action was on J.C. Tran who made the call. He turned over 66, dominated by his opponent's 88. Tran needed to hit a two-outer but the board did not want to hear his cries for help. It failed to offer Tran relief and he doubled up his opponent. Tran was still over 100,000 in chips after the hand, so there was not too much harm done.

David Farber - 220,000
Ferit Gabriellson - 218,000
Jesper Petersen - 205,000
Davidi Kitai - 186,000
Storylines
Johannes Strassmann was eliminated as the bubble when his ace-king fell victim to the ace-jack of Jonathan Aguiar. Aguiar flopped a jack and turned another.
Tournament officials announced, because of the lengthy hand-for-hand session, the players would play one more level, have a 20-minute break, play two levels, then break for dinner.
Big Hands
Todd Makes Massive Double-Up
Day 1 chip leader Jesper Petersen was one of the few players who could have taken on this kind of hit and still stand tall. He raised preflop to 6500, and was reraised to 23,000 by Eugene Todd. Petersen then raised over the top again, moving all-in while having Todd covered. Todd committed his remaining 55,000 in chips and tabled 99. Petersen was in the lead with QQ. But the flop was exactly what Todd needed, coming 982. The 4 on the turn was followed by the J on the river and Todd doubled up.
Can't Put One Past Fast Eddie
Edward "Fast Eddie" Ochana called 16,500 from the player in seat 5 after the flop came 1093. After the 2 on the turn made a four-flush board, Ochana checked and his opponent bet 27,000. Undaunted, Ochana made the call again. The river brought the 10 to pair the board, and after his opponent checked, Ochana tabled Q9 for second pair with no heart. It was enough to take the pot down.
The Rich Get Richer
Rich Murnick was on the button and pushed his remaining 30,900 into the center of the table. Seat 6 tanked before making the call with his own short stack. Murnick held JJ, while his opponent held AQ. The board ran out 762K9 and Murnick doubled up.
Jacob Takes a Hit
Alex Jacob had his shortstack take another hit when he called an all-in move by another shortstack who flipped over 109. Jacob was in the lead with A3 and held the edge to the river. The board read 522J, before the 9 at the end cost Jacob another 9,100 in chips, leaving him with just 21,000.

Cheung called, saying, “I don’t have much.” Cheung turned over QJ and was delighted to see Perry flip 77. The flop was 944, but the turn was the Q and Perry tossed his orange high into the air in frustration (catching it as it came down, of course). The turn 8 brought no help and Perry was eliminated in 20th place.
Kitai Does In Quinn
Dan Quinn limped on the button, Davidi Kitai call from the small blind, and Michael Binger checked his option. The flop rolled out QJ7 and the two blinds checked to Quinn who bet 12,000. Kitai called and Binger folded. The turn was the A. Kitai checked again, Quinn bet 42,000, and Kitai raised a nominal amount to put Quinn all-in. The two showed their cards:
Kitai: Q10
Quinn: Q9
The river was the 5 and Quinn was eliminated in 19th place.

Big Hands and Storylines:
Action is down to 3 tables. Some of the more notable players still alive are Michael Binger, Lee Watkinson, Benjamin Roberts, Chris Bell and Eugene Todd.
Bell Chips Away
Michael Binger raised from the button and was called by Chris Bell from the big blind. The board was checked all the way down, coming 9-9-4-3-8. "King- Queen," Binger said after the final check. "Two pair," was Bell's answer as he flipped over 5-5 to take the pot.
A few hands later, Binger raised to 11,000 and was called by Bell again. The flop came AQ3 and both players checked. When the 10 fell on the turn Bell bet out 20,000 and Binger quickly folded.
Sluzinski Has Freedman's Number
Noah Freedman raised preflop and Jeff Sluzinski reraised, putting Freedman all in. Freedman made the call and showed AQ. Sluzinski showed 1010. The flop was great for Freedman, coming A87. The turn was a safe 4. But the river was brutal, coming 10 to get Sluzinski a set. After the chips were counted, Freedman was left with just 5 blue chips, equalling 2,500.
He got it in a few hands later and again ran into some bad luck against Sluzinski. Freedman was all in blind, yet still flipped over a big hand - AK. Sluzinski was way behind with just A-3. However, the flop was gross - coming A-3-3 to give Sluzinski a full house. The turn made it interesting, as a king came out. But the river was a 7 and Freedman wished the players good luck and left the table laughing.
Todd Doubles
A short stacked Eugene Todd got all in with one caller, Keith Greer. Todd showed AJ against Greer's 's 99. The board was good for Todd, running J33A2 to double him up to around 60,000.

Big Hands:
A Lovely Lady Doubles
Clonie Gowen was essentially all in preflop, committing the rest of her chips blind just before the flop was dealt. The flop came J66 and her opponent called her all in and showed A2. Gowen turned over AJ and was in dominating shape. The board finished 79 and Gowen doubled to around 15,000.
Lovely Ladies Cruel to a Lovely Lady
Vanessa Rousso got all in preflop and was called by Eugene Todd. Rousso turned over QQ, then saw the bad news when Todd turned over KK. The board ran 985107 to give Todd a pointless flush. After the chips were counted out it was revealed that Todd barely had Rousso outchipped and she was eliminiated.
And Yet Another Lovely Lady Doubles, Busts Later
The UK's young, talented and beautiful Olivia Boeree was on the verge of busting when she was all in with Q-10 against A-9. The board ran K-6-5-K and things didn't look good. But a 10 came on the river and Boeree doubled up to around 13,000. However, she busted just before the level's end.
Galasso Takes Out Two Opponents With Aces
Paul Quade, Mike Cordell and Amato Galasso got all in preflop with Galasso having both opponents covered. Quade showed 88, Cordell showed 55 and Galasso showed AA. The flop hit the underdog, coming 10-7-5 to give Cordell the set. His celebration was short-lived however, as an ace hit on the turn. The river was a meaningless 6 and Galasso knocked out Quade and Cordell with a set of aces.

Big Hands:
The Field Gets Smaller - Courtesy of Selbst
After a flop of 962, the player in seat 5 pushed his remaining 25,000 into the pot and was called by Vanessa Selbst. Seat 5 showed JJK10 for a pair of jacks and a club flush draw. Selbst showed AA107 for a pair of aces. The turn was the 8, giving Selbst the straight, and the river was the J. Selbst was pleasantly surprised to take the pot, because she said she didn't even see the straight out there and only saw the rivered set of jacks for the player in seat 5. Selbst ended the level with in chips.
Just before the end of the level, Selbst was heads up with the player in seat 8 when she bet 19,000 on a flop of 1093. Seat 9 called and turn brought the J. Seat 9 pushed his remaining stack all in and Selbest instantly called showing KKQ7 for the nut straight. The river bricked and Selbst sent another one packing.
Natte Knocks off a Pair
Craig Natte had a pair of all-in short-stacks covered preflop and saw the board come out KQ975. The 7 was the river card and gave Natte, who held the A1095, the nut flush. He eliminated both Jordan Morgan and Colin York on the hand.
Morgan Crippled With Kings
Colin York raised to 19,000 preflop, Jordan Morgan reraised to 64,000 from the button, and Eugene Todd took the opportunity to push all-in for 105,000 total. York folded and Morgan called, showing KK33. Todd showed AA92. Greg Cox, who was all-in for just 2000 chips, held AQ94. The flop came J84, followed by the 2 on the turn and 4 on the river. Todd won the majority of the pot with two pair, aces and fours, while Morgan was crippled down to 14,000 remaining. Cox actually won the main pot with trip fours to stand at 8,000.
Cox then tripled up on the next hand, and doubled up on the next, to remain in play.

Big Hands:
What a Way to Go
Max Pescatori knew he had to dodge some bullets, but he couldn't have seen the end coming the way that it did. Greg Cox raised from the small blind to 14,000, and both Pescatori and Craig Natte called to see the flop which ran out Q95. From that point on, all three players went all-in, with Cox having the others covered. Pescatori, the short-stack of the three, had about 35,000 in chips and held top set with the QQ108. Cox matched the 44,000 of Natte with the AA96. Natte was reduced to bottom set with the 5522. The 4 came on the turn, which became relevant when the 3 hit the river. It was suddenly Natte, holding the 52 of clubs, who scooped the massive pot worth 168,000 in chips. Pescatori was eliminated and Cox had just 26,000 remaining in chips.
Pickering Eliminates Hougaard
Jamie Pickering raised to 14,000 preflop and Carter Gill called. Jesper Hougaard then raised for 2,000 more all-in from the small blind and both players called. The flop came A64 and Pickering bet pot, which prompted Gill to fold. Pickering showed AA108 for top set, which eliminated Hourgaard who held K-Q-J-4. The board finished 92.
Gill Runs Out of Steam
Carter Gill was active in the majority of pots at his table, but finally ran out of momentum against Vanessa Selbst. Selbst raised to 10,000 preflop and Gill went to 36,000 from the cut off. The flop came KQ7 and Selbst checked. Gill pushed his remaining 37,000 in chips and Selbst called, showing AQJ8 for middle pair. Gill held 10-10-9-7 and was eliminated in 23rd place.
Gill had earlier come up short in an attempt to eliminate Jeff Brown. Brown had 25,000 in chips and was all-in with QJ98. Gill had the AKJ8. The board ran out AQQ95 and Brown had flopped trips to stay alive.
Todd Eliminates Another
Lawrence Cowsar bet 10,000 after a flop of J74. Eugene Todd raised to put Cowsar all-in for his remaining stack. Cowsar held 7733 for middle set, while Todd had the AJ75 for top two pair with a flush draw. The 6 on the river sent Cowsar to the sideline.

Big Hands:
Quads are Good
Six players saw the flop to create a 30,000 pot. The flop came A43. Calen McNeil led out with a 15,000 bet and Thom Schultz raised it to 41,000. It left him with just 7000 in chips. McNeil debated his decision for awhile, long enough to proclaim "call" rather than raise the final 7000. Both players then put the remaining chips in blind. Schultz held 7544 for middle set while McNeil had the KJJ3 for a flush draw. The 4 on the turn ended the drama and preserved Schultz's tournament life, giving him quads. The K finished the board.
Stanley Smiles
Stanley Statkiewicz managed a major double up when he spiked the river against Ryan Lenaghan. Lenaghan hit the flop of JJ2, holding trips with the QJ96. Statkiewicz held the KK5-4, and trailed after the A hit the turn. But the K on the river gave Statkiewicz a set to take the pot down and chip up to 72,000.
Todd Dodges Trouble
Carter Gill raised to 6500 preflop and got the call from Eugene Todd. The flop came J33. Both players checked and the 10 hit the turn. Todd checked, Gill bet 8000 and Todd folded, Gill showed him the J3 for the flopped full house.
Cowsar Runs for Two Pair
Lawrence Cowsar was all-in for 10,000 which Vanessa Selbst called. Craig Natte in the small blind then reraised, and Selbst folded, Cowsar held the A1085, while Natte had KKQJ. The flop came Q92 to give Cowsar the flush draw, but it was the running two pair of the 5 on the turn and 8 on the river that created the winning hand.
Gill Takes Another Hit
Carter Gill called 43,000 after a flop of J98. He showed the J107-5, but his opponent had flopped a straight while holding AKQ10. Gill tumbled to 33,000 in chips.

$2,000 No-Limit Hold'em - Level One Recap
Jun 12, '08
Blinds: 25-50
Entrants So Far: 1,315
Eliminations:
Henry Tran
Notable Names in the Field:
Barry Greenstein
Scotty Nguyen
Men Nguyen
Jeff Madsen
Mark Seif
Jeff Williams
Big Hands and Storylines:
Greenstein picks up chips with semibluff
Barry Greenstein called a raise out of the big blind and then checked and called a bet after a flop of A85. After the 3 on the turn, Greenstein again checked and then raised his opponent's bet of 400 to 2,400. His opponent folded, and Shankar Pillai guessed Greenstein had 65. Greenstein said he rarely shows his hands, but after Pillai's comment he turned over 76.
Seif Folds on the River
Mark Seif called a raise in the big blind and three players saw a flop of AKQ. The preflop raiser bet 300 and Seif was the only caller. The turn was the 5 and Seif checked and then called a bet of 650. The river was the 6 and Seif checked and his opponent bet 1,050. Seif quickly folded and was down to about 2,700 chips.
Eugene's two hours start well
Eugene Todd, who will be playing the final table $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha tournament at 2 p.m., still went ahead and played in this tournament. Early in the level he raised his opponent's bet of 275 to 1,100 after a flop of AQJ. His opponent called, and then both players checked it down after the turn and river of Q and 3, respectively. Todd flipped over A-J and his opponent mucked.
Tran out in a hurry
Henry Tran raised to 175 from the button and Rainer Meyer reraised to 600 from the small blind. Tran moved all in for 1,375 more and Meyer called with A9. Tran held 1010 and appeared to be in good shape. But an ace came on the flop, and Tran quickly headed to the exit.
Men “the Master” Nguyen Loses One, Wins One
One victory and one loss for Men “the Master” Nguyen, who was seated with Scotty Nguyen on a table in the Amazon Room’s green section.
After a player in middle position came in for a raise to 150, the player in the small blind called as well as Men “the Master” Nguyen in the big blind. The small blind and Nguyen checked the AA2 flop, as did the middle position pre-flop aggressor. The 6 on the turn brought checks from small blind and Nguyen, but this time the middle position player made a bet of 150. The small blind folded, but Nguyen called and checked the K on the river. His opponent bet 250, and Nguyen called only to see his opponent turn over AQ. Nguyen mucked.
Several hands later, Nguyen opened for a raise to 150 from early position and received two callers in late position. Nguyen checked the 887 flop, and his next to act opponent made a bet of 300. After the other caller folded, Nguyen check-raised his opponent for an additional 800 in chips. His opponent deliberated, but eventually released his hand.
Freddy Deeb Can’t Make Six-High Win the Pot
After a player in late position limped into the pot on Freddy Deeb’s table (which he shared with Hevad “Rain” Khan), the player in the small blind completed and Deeb checked his big blind option. The flop came 1087 and the small blind checked. Deeb bet 150, the late position limper called, and the small blind folded. Deeb and his opponent took the 8 turn heads-up, and both players checked. The 7 on the river brought another round of checking, and Deeb turned over 64. His opponent showed down K10 and took the pot. “I was hoping you couldn’t beat six-high,” Deeb joked after missing both his flush and straight draw.
