Erick LindgrenDay 1A at the 2011 Aussie Millions $10,000 no-limit hold’em main event featured as much pomp and circumstance as the first day of a similarly-titled event that takes place in Las Vegas each summer. The opening ceremonies included videos, live music, a few words from defending champion Tyron Krost, a declaration by the Crown Casino to match all player donations directed at Australian flood crises relief, and the pronouncement of “Shuffle Up and Deal!” by Australia’s own, Joe Hachem. Card Player TV caught much of the preliminary proceedings in the Crown Poker Room on camera.

After Hachem gave the dealers the go-ahead cards got into the air and 238 players decided to take their chances on the first of three starting days for the tournament. There were many big names in the field today, including the chip leader at the end of play, Team Full Tilt pro Erick Lindgren.

He claimed the bulk of his large chip stack when he made a full house during the last level of play. He moved all in on a QHeart Suit 10Heart Suit 2Club Suit flop with pocket tens and an opponent made the all-in call with KHeart Suit 9Heart Suit. The turn brought the 5Heart Suit to put Lindgren behind his opponent’s flush, but the river saw the lead change hands once again when the 5Diamond Suit hit the table and gave Lindgren a full house. That pot shot him up to 170,000.

Patrik Antonius Lindgren isn’t the only Team Full Tilter at the top of the standings. He is joined at the summit by Patrik Antonius (176,500) and Phil Ivey (134,200), who both had impressive days on the felt. Antonius played well despite a distraction competing for his attention in the form of a huge video screen.

Antonius was watching the tennis match that featured Andy Roddick playing just down the street at the Australian Open as intently as anyone but that didn’t stop him from growing one of the largest stacks in the tournament. After he built his stack steadily throughout level 6 he ended that level with his biggest pot of the day.
After a series of bets and raises took place the cards sat 10Spade Suit 9Diamond Suit 4Club Suit KClub Suit on the board. The pot was pretty sweet when his opponent bet 36,000 after the turn and that was when Antonius decided to shove all in. His opponent made the call and had Antonius covered. Their cards:

Antonius: KSpade Suit 10Club Suit
Opponent: JSpade Suit 8Spade Suit

River: 6Diamond Suit

Antonius doubled up to 125,000 after the hand.
