John Monnette had cashed 16 times at the World Series of Poker before the start of $2,500 eight-game mixed event at the 2011 WSOP. He had come very close to winning his first gold bracelet in 2009, but he finished runner up behind Phil Ivey in the $2,500 deuce-to-seven lowball. Monnette has now achieved what had eluded him before by topping a talented final table in a 489-player-field tournament late last night. He was awarded his first gold bracelet and $278,144 in prize money.
Monnette now has career earnings worth $1,225,910 with $596,058 of that coming at World Series events. Monnette’s competition at the final table included John Racener, John Juanda (Who finished five spots shy of winning his second bracelet of the summer), Brent Hanks, and his heads-up opponent Eric Buchman. The former November Niner took home $171,855 in second place, just falling short of his second gold bracelet.

Buchman: J 7 A 8 2
John Racener was all in on fifth street with a pair of kings against Erich Buchman’s flush draw. Buchman hit the flush on sixth street with the 5, and although Racener double-paired the 3 on sixth, he bricked the river and was the first to go, eliminated in 8th place ($24,797).
Adam Kornuth Eliminated in 7th Place ($32,373)
No-Limit Hold’em
Michele Limongi limped in before the flop, Adam Kornuth shoved for 265,000 from the small blind and Limongi called.
Kornuth turned over 8 8 but was behind Limongi’s 1010.
The board came 7 4 2 7 J, no help for Adam Kornuth who was eliminated in 7th place ($32,373).
John Juanda Eliminated in 6th Place ($42,897)
Limit Hold’em
Eric Buchman raised from the small blind, John Juanda three-bet all in from the big blind and Buchman called.
Juanda turned over K 2 and was ahead of Buchman’s 8 6.
The board came A 9 7 10 6, giving Buchman a straight on the river. John Juanda was denied his second bracelet of the summer as he was eliminated in 6th place ($42,897).
Desmond Portano Eliminated in 5th Place ($57,692)

Desmond Portano was all in on third street against John Monnette.

Portano made a 10 – 8 – 6 – 4 – 3 low but was beat by Monnnette’s 10 – 7 – 5 – 3 – 2. Desmond Portano was eliminated in 5th place ($57,692).
Brent Hanks Eliminated in 4th Place ($78,774)

Brent Hanks started the level as the short stack and didn’t wait long before getting it all in on the river with an open pair of sixes against John Monnette.

Monnette: K 6 4
Hanks saw fourth street for one bet and it was checked to fifth. Monnette bet the last three streets and Hanks ended up calling all in for the last bet on seventh street. Monnette turned over K 7 2 for a pair of kings (high) and a 7 – 6 – 4 – 3 – 2 low, scooping the pot. Brent Hanks was eliminated in 4th place ($78,774).
Michele Limongi Eliminated in 3rd Place ($109,425)

Erich Buchman button-raised, Michele Limongi three-bet the small blind, John Monnette four-bet the big blind, Buchman folded and Limongi called.
The flop came Q 9 3, Limongi checked, Monnette bet and Limongi called.
The turn was the 8, Limongi moved all in and Monnette called. Monnette turned over A A for the best hand while Limongi was drawing dead with A 2. Michele Limongi was eliminated in 3rd place ($109,425) while John Monnette took a big chip lead against Eric Buchman going into heads-up play.

Eric Buchman started heads-up play with a chip deficit and John Monnette managed to further widen the gap during the initial Stud portion of the final match. Buchman was short by the time Stud-8 rolled around and got it all in on fourth street in this last hand of the night.

Monnette paired jacks on fifth street while Buchman paired sixes on the river and without a low hand, Eric Buchman was eliminated in 2nd Place ($171,855). John Monnette grabbed the gold bracelet and the $278,144 grand prize for winning Event #23.
